Blended Capital is a strategic approach to equitable finance. Capital doesn’t always flow to where it’s most needed. As Luca Torre of GAWA Capital aptly said, “The issue is not a lack of solutions but their distribution.” This is why the strategy of #blendedcapital is so vital in creating sustainable change, especially in underserved markets around the globe. Blended capital leverages #firstloss capital — typically provided by philanthropies or public funds — as a layer of protection to de-risk financial schemes and attract commercial and institutional investors. For example: ??Philanthropies offer #catalyticfunding that can serve as ‘grant-like’ liquidity at the base of an experimental fund. The capital should be regenerative (with repayments flowing back into the pool to be lent out again), but the capital layer can also absorb losses absent of crippling penalties. ??Development banks, with higher risk tolerances than commercial banks, provide the next layer of capital. They take on debt that is subordinated to senior debt holders, this being elevated risk in exchange for higher returns. ??Traditional commercial banks can come in at the top of the stack as senior debt holders, having the least risk exposure but also lower returns. What you end up with is a fund that is large enough to scale impact and learn across a myriad of targeted cohort groups. This tiered approach allows each stakeholder to engage at a level aligned with their risk appetite, elegantly ensuring capital flows where it’s most needed without compromising the financial system’s stability. I saw blended capital approaches in action while working with Hello Tractor and various partners across Sub-Saharan Africa to raise funds for mechanization projects for smallholder farmers. The presence of catalytic funding is a game-changer, enabling blended funds to de-risk initiatives and unlock access to capital for the greater good. But here in the U.S., this approach is still underutilized. A major barrier is #awareness — blended capital and concepts like first-loss layers aren’t widely referenced in finance education or traditional banking tracks. In a recent financial literacy article for The Washington Informer, 2024 Financial Literacy Supplement: Navigating Financial -- Jacqueline McSears Boles, SVP and Director of Retail Banking, highlighted the importance of financial literacy in our schools. She noted that according to the Federal Reserve Board's 2022 Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households survey, 37% of Americans do not have enough savings to cover a $400 emergency expense, underscoring the need for financial education in schools. Additionally, she referenced a 2021 survey by CollegeFinance.com, which revealed that college students carry an average credit card debt of over $3,280.
