This #WomensHistoryMonth, we honor Alana Shepherd, a visionary philanthropist & tireless disability advocate. In 1975, Alana co-founded Shepherd Center after her son's paralyzing spinal cord injury, creating a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital that provides exceptional care for spinal cord and brain injuries, traumatic amputations, strokes and multiple sclerosis. Alana's advocacy has made lasting impacts, including adding ADA-compliant wheelchair lifts to the MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) buses and making Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport one of the most accessible airports in the U.S. She also fought to bring the 1996 Paralympic Games to Atlanta, leading the International Olympic Committee – IOC to require future Olympic bids to include Paralympic plans and accessibility for all athletes. We're investing $350,000 to support a more resilient and #sustainable future in Montana through Ducks Unlimited's Soil Health Program, which equips farmers and ranchers with the tools they need to thrive in changing climate conditions. The program provides farmers and ranchers with technical assistance, #education, support from DU's conservation team for restoration design and cost-share funding for supplies like fencing and seed.
