In Our Own Voice (IOOV) and the National Partnership for Women & Families (NPWF) recently released an issue brief detailing how the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has impeded access to abortion, disrupted economic futures and put the health and lives of millions of Americans at risk. Black women in particular have borne the brunt - the majority of Black women of reproductive age in the United States – 57% – live in states that have banned or are likely to ban abortion. Learn more from IOOV President and CEO Regina Davis Moss and NPWF President Jocelyn Frye about the findings from the brief and ways that policymakers can strengthen access to and coverage of abortion in order to provide dignified and safe pregnancy and birth outcomes, equitable health care, and the social, economic, political, and cultural supports needed for Black people and families to thrive.

This week marks the start of the 30th anniversary of Reproductive Justice, a movement championed by inspiring founding mothers who laid the groundwork for our ongoing fight for equality and justice. While attending a conference in Chicago from July 29-31, 1994, they became frustrated with its singular focus on abortion. They needed an agenda that addressed the unique concerns and lived experiences of Black women and girls who faced tremendous health inequities like high rates of infant and maternal mortality, breast cancer, fibroids, sexual and intimate partner violence, HIV/AIDS, and other STIs . After meeting in a hotel room, the term “Reproductive Justice” was coined. We invite you to honor their legacy by joining @BlackWomensRJ and downloading our toolkit to become an #RJVoter. Learn about their contributions and find out how you can make a difference. Let's continue to advocate for reproductive justice together.
