Mia Taylor and TravelPulse, thank you for including our voice and perspective on the state of DEI in travel & tourism. This article is comprehensive, inclusive and representative of industry organizations, travel brands and small businesses that are committed to staying the course and leaning into DEI to ensure that our industry and the world remains equitable and inclusive for all!

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion has become such a fraught landscape. In reporting this special, in-depth feature for TravelPulse, it was eye-opening how few leading travel companies wanted to go on the record and talk about this topic. In a country founded on the principles of free speech, so many voices are already being muted amid an environment filled with fear. This is especially concerning in the travel industry - which prides itself on being a force for good. I'm thankful for those who were willing to share their thoughts for this report on where things stand in the travel industry with regard to DEI - and where the industry may be headed. Some of the voices included: "At Intrepid Travel, we remain unwavering in our commitment to DEI, regardless of shifts in federal policies," Leigh Barnes, president of Intrepid Travel, Americas. "USTOA believes that travel is a force for good, and as such, we will continue to focus on sustainability and DEI," Terry Dale, of the United States Tour Operators Association. "The USTOA Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and you, our members, remain steadfast in our support of efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion industry wide." "What remains clear is that DEI efforts in the travel and tourism industry have yet to fully address the systemic exclusion of Black professionals in C-suite positions and Black-owned tourism businesses," says Stephanie M. Jones, MBA, of Blacks in Travel & Tourism. "In fact, White women, Latino and Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and individuals with physical mobility challenges have benefitted far more from DEI and Affirmative Action." "The shifting DEI landscape sends a powerful message globally about who we are as a country. It’s not just about internal policies; it’s also about how travelers are welcomed and treated," Laurence Pinckney, CEO of Zenbiz Travel. told TravelPulse. Thank God we do not need the federal government’s permission to celebrate Black history, our Black cultural heritage and our Black leaders and ancestors who made and continue to make significant contributions to this country. Although they stake a claim, live and work in the White House, they can never erase the fact that it was Black laborers that built it! Our stories will never be erased because Black tour operators across this country live and breathe life into preserving and telling the stories of America’s rich Black cultural heritage. They tell the stories of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy and the civil rights movement daily. Black cultural organizations and communities have been celebrating Juneteenth long before it became a national holiday. We won’t stop so this administration better get it’s knee off our necks as Rev. Al Sharpton exclaimed during the eulogy of George Floyd. Check out this feature. https://lnkd.in/eTspUsQx #WeWontStopTellingOurStories #GetYourKneeOffOurNecks #DrMartinLutherKingJrEveryday #Juneteenth #DEIStillMatters #SupportBlackTourOperators #PreserveOurBlackHistory
