关于我们

Black Nurses Week? was created to elevate and unify the Black nursing community. We know that Black nurses have a powerful impact in reducing healthcare disparities and effectively advocating for patients of color in the healthcare organizations that we choose to serve. The goal of Black Nurses Week is to designate a specific week out of the year to celebrate and shine the light on Black nursing excellence. Inaugurated in 2022, July 26-August 1 will be the annual designated week chosen to celebrate Black Nurses Week in honor of Mary Eliza Mahoney. Mary was the first African American nurse to graduate with her professional nursing diploma in the United States of America on August 1, 1879. Black Nurses Week will activate its vision with its monumental events that are strategically designed to elevate, celebrate, motivate, and educate the Black nursing community while building stronger social bonds and unity. We look forward to meeting you at a Black Nurses Week event.

  • ?? The Untold Legacy of Black Wet Nurses & Black Nursing Excellence ?? As Black healthcare professionals, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us—healers, caregivers, and advocates whose contributions were often erased from history. One of the most overlooked chapters is the legacy of?Black wet nurses—enslaved women who were forced to breastfeed and care for their enslavers’ children, often while their own were neglected. This practice wasn’t just an act of survival; it was the beginning of Black women’s deep-rooted role in?maternal and infant care, a legacy that evolved into midwifery, nursing, and modern healthcare leadership. Despite centuries of oppression, Black women turned caregiving into a force for community strength and medical excellence. Yet, this history is?rarely taught in medical or nursing schools.?Understanding it is crucial—not just as a reminder of where we come from, but as a call to continue advocating for?Black maternal health, equitable healthcare policies, and the representation of Black professionals in leadership. This?Black History Month, let’s honor the resilience of those who came before us and celebrate the Black healthcare professionals who continue to?break barriers, lead, and heal. ???Did you learn about the history of Black wet nurses in your training? How does this legacy inspire you in your profession??Drop a comment and share your thoughts! #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackNursingExcellence #BlackNursingHistory #NursesonLinkedIn #BlackWomenInHealthcare #BlackNursesMatter #BlackNursesWeek

  • ?Marie Van Brittan Brown (1922-1999)? Did you know that a Black nurse helped revolutionize home security? Marie was a trailblazing Black nurse and inventor whose brilliance changed the way we protect our homes. In 1966, she co-invented the first-ever home security system, paving the way for modern surveillance technology. As a nurse working late shifts, Marie wanted to feel safe when home alone. So, she took matters into her own hands-designing a system with cameras, a peephole, and a two-way microphone, allowing her to see and communicate with visitors before opening the door. Her patent laid the foundation for today’s security cameras, video doorbells, and alarm systems! Marie’s story is a reminder that Black nurses don’t just save lives-we innovate, lead, and break barriers in ways that transform the world. #blackhistorymonth #blacknursinghistory #blacknursesweek #nurseinnovators #nursesonlinkedin #blacknursesmatter

  • Dear Black Nurse, As we enter Black History Month, we are reminded that our history is not just a collection of past victories—it is a living, breathing movement that continues with us today. This month is a time to honor the legacy of those who came before us, trailblazers like Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first Black registered nurse in the U.S., and Susie King Taylor, who fearlessly provided care during the Civil War despite the dangers. We stand on the shoulders of these pioneers who endured systemic barriers yet remained steadfast in their mission to heal and uplift our people. But history is not just something we remember—it is something we create. Right now, each of us is writing a new chapter. Every patient we advocate for, every student we mentor, and every policy we help shape is another step toward a future where Black nurses are no longer the exception but the expectation in leadership, research, and clinical excellence. We must acknowledge a hard truth: No one is coming to save us. The disparities in healthcare, the biases in treatment, and the lack of representation in leadership are issues that demand our action. We must save ourselves. That means showing up for our communities, educating and empowering our patients, and ensuring that the next generation of Black nurses knows their worth and wields their power. This Black History Month, let us not only celebrate the past but commit to the future. Let us continue breaking barriers, pushing boundaries, and ensuring that Black nurses remain at the forefront of healthcare. We are history in the making. With gratitude and solidarity, Signed, A Black nurse ?? #Blackhistorymonth #Blacknursesmatter #Blacknursingexcellence #nursesonlinkedin
