This past Saturday, in partnership with Linda Wilson and the Fund II Foundation, Qualtrics, and Texas Southern University we had the honor of hosting a dynamic policy roundtable during #AfroTech 2024 in Houston, TX. The session brought together some of the most innovative minds in technology and policy to tackle one of our most pressing challenges: leveraging technology to address health disparities and equity issues in our communities. We are incredibly grateful to the state legislators (Karen Camper, Tonya P. Anderson, MBA, MDiv, Amos O'Neal, Jamila E. Taylor, Marcus C. Evans, Jr., Clyde Vanel, Cherrish S. Pryor, Willie Preston, Toni Rose, Daryl Porter, and Jolanda Jones) who joined us for their commitment to advancing equitable policies in their states. Your leadership and insights are critical to bridging the gap between innovation and real-world impact. We also want to thank the tech leaders, health equity experts, and community advocates who contributed to this important dialogue. Together, we explored actionable strategies to align resources, foster public-private partnerships, and create tech-driven solutions for underserved communities. A special shoutout to AfroTech for providing an incredible platform to engage in meaningful conversations about the intersection of tech and policy. The energy and brilliance of the AfroTech community continue to inspire us! This roundtable is just the beginning. At the Black Legislative Leaders Network, we remain committed to ensuring that technology serves as a tool for equity, not division. Stay tuned for more collaborations as we work toward a more just and inclusive future for all. #AfroTech #PolicyInnovation #HealthEquity #BlackLeadership #TechForGood

Since 2022, when fans trying to secure concert and other event tickets were traumatized by the failures of our current ticketing market, state legislatures have considered three times more concert and event ticketing bills over the last two years than ever before. On Thursday, November 13, The Recording Academy, NIVA - National Independent Venue Association, Black Legislative Leaders Network, and Fix the Tix will host a primer on state ticketing policy and a briefing on what will ensure consumers are protected against predatory ticket sellers that have flooded the market with fake tickets and deceptive websites that have caused consumers to unnecessarily pay more for tickets. This meeting is exclusively for state legislators and their staff. Its purpose is to educate policymakers on the ticketing issues they will face during the 2025 sessions.

The U.S. faces a stark reality when it comes to maternal health care, particularly for Black women. Black mothers are more than three times as likely to die from pregnancy-related complications as their white counterparts. These disparities stem from a complex web of factors—including systemic inequities in health care, lack of access to quality services, and racial bias. This summit, hosted by Virginia Speaker of the House Don Scott and Senate President Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas, is an unprecedented step toward confronting these challenges head-on. We are laying the groundwork for state-level solutions to reverse these troubling trends by bringing together policymakers, health experts, and advocates. Join us for the Black Maternal Health Legislative Summit on October 17 & 18.

The power of state legislatures has grown significantly in recent years, and they now play a crucial role in protecting the civil rights of American citizens.? States are introducing more legislation faster and more frequently than the US Congress. While there is still much work to be done, it is encouraging to see a record number of Black men and women serving in elected legislative leadership roles across the country. The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed countries, and Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. This disparity is even more pronounced in Southern states, where most Black women live, give birth, and experience significant barriers to quality healthcare. The consequences of ignoring this crisis extend beyond maternal deaths—Black mothers are also more likely to experience severe complications during pregnancy and childbirth, leading to long-term health issues for both mothers and their children. We invite you to support this important cause and join a transformative movement to address maternal health disparities in the Southern states.
