Activating Partnerships and Policies for a Healthier Future

Honored to serve as a panelist during this Summit discussing 304B… As you may know …. the 340B Program was created by Congress in 1992 to help hospitals and patients deal with rising drug costs. The program allows covered entities to buy outpatient drugs at a discount from manufacturers. The program is based on the Medicaid Drug Rebate Program, which limits how much state Medicaid programs pay for drugs. Covered entities can save 20 to 50% on outpatient drugs through the program. In theory it has helped hospitals access lifesaving drugs and treatments for patients and serve low-income patients and communities. Further meant to help rural hospitals that often don't have in-house pharmacies. The program has expanded over time to include more covered entities, such as critical access hospitals and sole community hospitals. It also allows covered entities to work with many 340B contract pharmacies to distribute drugs. This all sounds reasonable and good for the health of millions and the system . However, as with any initiative there are “issues” and concerns. This panel will attempt to delve into the pros, cons and actuality of the program addressing goals—- but also discrepancies related to accountability, transparency and measurement of how funds are being used. Drug middlemen continue to find new ways to game the system all while increasing their control of what patients pay, where patients get their medicine and ultimately what medicines patients can get. This is another example of blatant abuse of the 340B program. https://lnkd.in/e-f5veZG
