关于我们
BDO is the world’s largest and most comprehensive online health resource specifically targeted to African Americans. As much as we’d love for healthcare to be one-size-fits-all, the reality is that this is not the case – today’s Black community has higher incidences of just about every major disease and condition out there, as well as shorter life spans. BDO understands that the uniqueness of Black culture - our heritage and our traditions - plays a role in our health. We also understand that there's a lot of mistrust of the healthcare system. That mistrust, combined with all the contradictory information in the media today, makes it difficult to truly feel in control of your health, and your life. But BDO gives you access to innovative new approaches to the health information you need in everyday language – so you can break through the disparities, gain control and live your life to its fullest. Guided by the leading physicians, BDO provides essential, but difficult to find, health resources for you and your family, including free referrals to the top Black physicians and health articles that focus on both culturally accurate content, as well as general health topics (yes, Blacks suffer from conditions like diabetes more, but they can break an arm, too). Let us help you see how good it feels to be in control of living a healthier, happier life!

We refuse to wait.? Cohort Sistas is empowering underrepresented doctoral students to overcome systemic barriers, build resilience, and lead the change they want to see in the world. This hopeful piece from Lauren Smith beautifully explains how our systems have developed the racial injustices we experience, and how we can make them more equitable. “Systems are not machines. They are made up of people. They are made up of us. We can either keep things the way they are, which isn’t working for many of us—or work for a better tomorrow.” How’s that for some motivation to close out the week? ?? https://lnkd.in/eZmxiSdT

Stay Motivated. Stay Focused. Stay Innovative. Because the movement to advance health equity for all in our nation does not stop based on an election. It continues to move forward because we understand that we have much more work to do to position America among the healthiest nations. Our work for a fairer, better, healthier society must continue with resilience and hope. Every step forward that we have made in this movement, no matter how small, has brought us closer to realizing our goal of a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive in good health and access health sustaining and health protective resources. Now we certainly have much more work to do considering the United States today ranks 60th in the world for life expectancy having fallen from 34th in 2016 and is expected to continue sliding further down unless we work diligently to remove the barriers that are preventing people from reaching full health potential. And the projected costs and economic impact owing to these differences in health outcomes and premature deaths among population groups in the United States is expected to reach a whopping $1 trillion in six years based on a study we conducted and is expected to continue moving up if we don’t succeed in reining them. As I reflect on the election results, and the implications for health equity, I am reminded of those periods in our nation’s history when advocates for health equity worked tirelessly to advance this agenda and secured success in realizing egalitarian policies and programs to benefit all population groups. Although they were met with periods of regression and retrenchment, they continued to seize opportunities to regroup, educate, activate, and advocate for health equity at all levels. Unfortunately, there were far too many advocates in our history who allowed themselves to be consumed with apathy and pessimism, which drove them further into helplessness. The challenges we face remind us of the urgency of our mission, but they also show the strength and solidarity within our movement. Together, we have made progress, and our voices are as important now as ever before as we find ourselves in this fourth period of awakening around health equity in our country. Let’s keep pushing forward, inspired by the change we know is possible, until health equity becomes a reality for all. I look forward to working with you to ensure that America does not backslide on this important goal. Meharry School of Global Health
