Celebrating Black History Month with BCREN: Honoring the Past, Building the Future Five years ago, BCREN was just an idea��a vision of a space where Black professionals in commercial real estate could connect, share experiences, and uplift one another. What began as an idea has evolved into a national nonprofit and a movement focused on increasing access, creating opportunities, and equipping Black professionals with resources needed to succeed in an industry where we have long been underrepresented��and, in many cases, outright excluded. Today, we are more than just a network��we are a community of over 1,200 members across the country and beyond, spanning industries, specialties, and borders. As we celebrate Black History Month, we do so with a deep awareness of the past, a commitment to the present, and a determination for the future. The scrutiny and resistance toward DEI efforts or the systemic barriers that persist��are not new. None of us are surprised. None of us are shocked. But we remain steadfast. BCREN has never been about exclusion. Our mission has never been about giving away opportunities that weren��t earned. It has always been about access, education, and knowledge sharing. It has been about ensuring that those with talent, drive, and ambition are not held back by lack of exposure or resources. It has been about making sure our industry reflects the rich diversity of the world we live in. We don��t claim to have all the answers��no one does. But we believe that together, we can help one another, lift each other up, and create opportunities that benefit us all. We will continue to do the work. Not just for ourselves, but for our members, for the communities we serve, and for the future generations that will stand on OUR shoulders. ?? Cultivating Change: Embedding Racial Equity in Real Estate Development ?? Last week I had the privilege of delivering the keynote at ULI New York's inaugural 2024 Equitable Development Summit, where we explored ULI��s 10 Principles for Embedding Racial Equity in Real Estate Development. Published in 2022, the report calls on industry leaders to center racial equity in their strategies and operations. These 10 Principles are not a prescriptive "how-to" but seeds of insight and change, meant to grow within our organizations. Yet, these seeds can only thrive if we prepare the environment, nurture their growth, and remain vigilant stewards of the change we seek. Without intentional care, they risk being uprooted prematurely, as we've seen in recent shifts across the country. Since the report's release, changes in the political climate have led some companies to retract their racial equity commitments, due to external pressures, impatience, or a lack of clarity on why these commitments were made. Our discussion emphasized the importance of stewarding change, enriched by insights from leaders who are putting these principles into practice and fostering equitable development outcomes: Joe Ritchie of Tishman Speyer Dawanna Williams of Dabar Development Partners LLC ShehilaRae Stephens of New York City Economic Development Corporation Robin Zeigler of MURAL Real Estate Partners Brian Allan Jackson of LEO Impact Capital Their insights were invaluable, demonstrating the power of intentional, sustained efforts.
