Two years ago, Black Women NJ emerged from a simple yet powerful vision by our founder Shanique Taliaferro —to unite, uplift, and empower Black women across New Jersey. It was built on the belief that when we come together, we create meaningful, lasting change. Yesterday, that vision reached an extraordinary milestone. March 19th is now officially recognized as Black Women NJ Day in Newark, the largest city in New Jersey. This recognition isn’t just a proclamation; it’s a powerful statement of what unity, collaboration, and resilience can achieve. It symbolizes the strength of a movement designed by Black women, for Black women. As we celebrate this honor, it’s a reminder that our journey is about more than just today. It’s about the legacy we are creating, the opportunities we are paving, and the communities we are empowering for generations to come. To everyone who has been a part of this movement—whether by contributing, supporting, or simply believing in our mission—this victory is yours. And to Mayor Ras Baraka and the City of Newark, thank you for recognizing our efforts and valuing the work we are doing within Newark and beyond. This achievement marks a new chapter. This marks the beginning of an exciting partnership to ensure Black women have a seat at the table in Newark. Mayor Ras Baraka and Amiri Baraka Jr. are fully committed to supporting BWNJ’s mission of collaboration, empowerment, and advocacy for Black-owned businesses across Newark and Essex County. We also had the privilege of stopping by to show love to our Orange family, led by one of our strongest supporters, Chief Brown. Did you know we’re gearing up for BWNJ Orange Day on July 25th?
