Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with?Rolling Out’s?CEO,?Munson Steed, for my second?CEO to CEO?interview to discuss the evolving role of Black museums, cultural preservation, and how the?ASSOCIATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUMS (AAAM)?is leading the charge. Since stepping into my role as?President & CEO of AAAM?in 2019, we’ve grown?membership by over 270%?and secured?over $6.5 million?in funding to strengthen Black museums nationwide. Beyond the numbers, this work is about ensuring that?our history remains visible, accessible, and celebrated—now and for future generations. ?? Motivated by our mission to champion women in our community, we are partnering with a Black woman maker for our 2025 programming fundraiser, in concert with Black History and Women’s History months. We are collaborating with Kel Cadet, the Creative Director of R-KI-TEKT, offering limited edition leather goods and apparel. Your financial support impacts the Black Women in Visual Art Foundation as vital seeds to initiate our 2025 programming goals. We are strengthening our offerings, expanding our reach and strategically amplifying how we navigate in a time where arts funding, especially for organizations working in diversity and equity, are diminishing and being threatened. All sales will benefit the Black Women in Visual Art Foundation (BWVAF), created to provide resources, programs and opportunities for Black womxn, from students to senior-level leaders. We aim to serve art workers with opportunities for connectivity, career development, and moments of reprieve through thoughtful programming and activations. We also plan to provide opportunities to amplify our voices and contributions to the arts and culture sector, while encouraging rest and reprieve. Each dollar will positively impact the future of another Black woman who seeks to thrive in the art world. Join us in transforming the ARTmosphere, and your personal style with R-KI-TEKT! Congratulations Erin Harkey!! ???? ??
Exciting news!??? We’re thrilled to announce that Erin Harkey will be joining Americans for the Arts as our new CEO this March. Erin’s leadership story is incredible - as Commissioner of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), she championed unprecedented support for the arts, leading the city’s largest-ever expansion of arts funding. But what really stands out is her passionate commitment to making arts and culture accessible to all communities. Following an extensive national search, Erin will join AFTA as CEO this March. At a time when our country needs connection more than ever, we believe arts and culture have a unique power to unite people across all backgrounds and beliefs. Erin’s joining us at this transformative moment, and we’re excited to see how her innovative vision will help strengthen local arts agencies and create more vibrant communities where arts and culture thrive across America. What she said!! Kudos Whitney McGuire ????????
Award Winning People and Planet Strategist | Former Director of Sustainability - Guggenheim Museum | Professor at Parsons School of Design | IP Attorney
Unpopular perspective, but instead of publicly announcing your sustainability and DEI progress, focus your efforts internally. Make this work an integral part of your organization’s operations. In other words, this work should be a no-brainer because it is baked into the organizational culture. This is not the time for external messaging around people and planet work, because there is a real risk that companies and organizations could be targeted by this current administration’s “policies.” Additionally, sustainability reporting may need to take a back seat as it falls within the realm of public communication and potentially puts your organization at risk of being targeted as well. You should continue to meet your reporting obligations in other jurisdictions, however. Here’s the thing: This toxic political landscape that we are navigating is yet a mere blip in the context of this work which is centered on longevity, habitability, care. The efforts we commit to now are vital more than ever because they will inevitably outlive every policy that is attempting to penalize work that centers people and the planet. This is actually an opportunity to transform your organizational culture to reflect empathic values for generations to come. In other words, whether or not you continue to prioritize people and planet will be the difference between whether or not your organization is relevant in the future. And the best place to start is right where you are.
