Black Women Build – Baltimore is an innovative home ownership initiative that works with Black women to rehabilitate vacant and deteriorated homes while providing support for life-based skills such as financial literacy, counseling, and nutrition all of which promotes social and economic freedom. Black Women Build – Baltimore believes that training women in trades-related work not only provides a tangible set of skills to be used on other jobs and in the home but allows women to make 2-3 times more in wages than traditionally female-centered jobs. We provide a safe and supportive community where women can learn carpentry, electrical, and plumbing during home improvement projects in the Upton and Druid Heights neighborhoods of West Baltimore. Most importantly, we create homeownership opportunities by rehabilitating distressed properties which the participants will own.

As we continue our work in neighborhoods like Upton and Druid Heights, we celebrate the organizations on the ground that are driving real change! During International Placemaking Week, we had the honor of witnessing Black Women Build - Baltimore in action as they rehabilitated a series of rowhomes—and we even heard from their visionary founder, Shelley Halstead. We also honor the legacy of Architect Jay Orr, AIA, LEED AP, whose decade-long volunteer work with NDC exemplified the power of community collaboration. His dedication to building a more equitable Baltimore continues to inspire us. Their transformative projects revitalize homes, uplift communities, and empower local voices. This year we have quietly strengthened our community. We are proud to share that we are expanding our programs in 2025 by creating a Community Resource Center to expand our intersectional services offering: financial wellness classes, a tool lending library, workshops, home repair support, and community programs. The CRC will also include a quiet and comfortable reading room and a tranquility garden which will have outdoor programming. We are creating the things we want to see in the neighborhood: mutual care and support, safe housing and spaces for children and families to come together. The CRC will be an epicenter to ensure lasting community connectedness. As the year comes to a close, we invite you to make a contribution to our capital campaign. We are 50% funded in our $1.5 million dollar goal, and are set to break ground in Spring 2025, but need your support to get across the finish line.
