Black Space creates a world for Black and Brown communities where therapy is a necessity, not a luxury.

Black Space is a community organization that provides free group therapeutic experiences for Black and Brown communities. In an effort to destigmatize mental wellness, Dr. Lia A. Knox, Corey Fells, and Darius Smith have come together to create beautiful and safe spaces, designated for healing communities that have been burdened by economic suppression, racial disparities in and limited access to quality health care, and a lack of culturally competent mental health providers. The organization operates in an inclusive infrastructure with sessions being tailored specifically to individuals who fall in the categories of Black and Brown women, the Black and Brown LGBTQ+ community, and Black and Brown men as the true eradication of systemic oppression is found in addressing problems that are specific to these communities.

Thank you Justice Grau of ACLU for curating a SAFE SPACE for our community to get to “KNOW THEIR RIGHTS!” The addition of mental wellness strategies is GENIUS!!??
I have always been curious in trying new ways to educate and connect with our community. Last December, I began to re envision how we could offer Know Your Rights trainings; I wanted something that would go beyond simply sharing knowledge and address the whole self.?When educating people of their rights, it’s crucial to understand how the lived experience impacts us and our neighbors. My dreams started to take shape into plans: we would break bread with people (because we all know how hard it is to?sit through anything 1 hour or longer), we would invite Black Space HQ into the mix to lead us in mindfulness exercises, practicing as a group some of the key phrases, we would offer swag that reflected the exact phrase to say when exercising your rights to build community confidence, and create a space where people felt comfortable sharing their story. My goal for my team was to train 10 orgs/groups by the end of the summer. Excitingly we have over half that goal in only two months, ultimately showing this program MATTERS. I’m so grateful for the orgs that have allowed us into their space, and grateful to have such a supportive team.
