Advocate for eliminating anti-Blackness and racism in the OD and change industry; Adviser to white OD practitioners; Curator of the Directory of Black and other Global Majority change consultants, coaches, and academics

Dear white friends, colleagues, and contacts — FOUR YEARS AGO THE WORLD WAS INTRODUCED TO BLACK LINKEDIN ? ?????????????This post celebrates the 4th anniversary of the public introduction of Black LinkedIn in The New York Times. ? ??In mid-2020, a combination of Covid-induced home working and the televised public murder of George Floyd catalyzed unprecedented posts on LinkedIn calling for an end to the anti-Blackness and racism ingrained in all Western economic, social, and political systems and institutions. ? ????LinkedIn’s white executives, managers, and content moderators reacted defensively and ruthlessly. Numerous Black users’?antiracism posts were removed without explanation. Many Black users’?posts were restricted so only they could see them. Some Black users’?accounts were suspended or cancelled. ? ??Then, in October 2020, The New York Times — one of America’s and the world’s most respected newspapers — published the article:?“Black LinkedIn Is Thriving. Does LinkedIn Have a Problem With That?" by Black journalist (now broadcasting executive) Ashanti Maya Martin. ?????? ? ??Ashanti coined the term?“Black LinkedIn” to introduce the spontaneous movement of Black antiracism content creators — overwhelmingly Black women — who were demanding to be heard by decision-makers, including Linkedin’s. Ashanti exposed the hidden conflictual dynamics between LinkedIn’s white executives and managers and many of its Black users. ? SINCE THEN ? ????Since the article’s publication four years ago, LinkedIn’s executives and managers have plainly accepted some responsibility to treat anti-Blackness, racism, and antiracism as important work and life issues. ? ????That this has happened is a credit to Black LinkedIn’s earliest antiracism content creators; to Ashanti Maya Martin for her impactful NYT article; and to the thousands of antiracism content creators and other contributors now active on LinkedIn. ? ????Two caveats to the point above about LinkedIn’s acceptance of some responsibility: 1) Its algorithm has been modified to reduce visibility of antiracism posts,?“to improve efficiency”; and 2) Content moderators still take down antiracism posts (claiming they violate guidelines), only reinstating them when their decisions are challenged. ? ????These caveats are just small reminders of the power LinkedIn – the leading human resourcing platform – wields in helping to ensure continuous white dominance across the Western business world. ? I WANT TO ? ????CELEBRATE the 4th anniversary of Black LinkedIn’s public introduction and the people involved; ? ????ACKNOWLEDGE that — in the past four years — LinkedIn’s white executives and managers have made noticeable efforts to fulfil their responsibilities to help end anti-Blackness and racism; ? ????THANK LinkedIn’s executives for making it possible for me to engage with so many Black LinkedIn content creators…named in three lists under Comments; and ????URGE you to follow the Black content creators I’ve listed.

Excerpt from Chapter Three “Imposter Syndrome or Imposter Treatment?” — I'm Not Yelling: A Black Woman’s Guide to Navigating the Workplace by Elizabeth Leiba. “I started to ask myself why I had been using the phrase “imposter syndrome” to describe my trepidation when I stepped into predominantly white spaces and felt like I didn’t belong or couldn’t perform at the level I was expected to. Usually when people, particularly women and specifically Black women, say we have “imposter syndrome,” we’re talking about the dictionary definition—something within us.” “I started to wonder why I had latched onto this phrase to explain and define my feelings. But the more I looked at the definition, the more I began to see that it didn’t fit my experience at all. I’m not saying it’s totally invalid, and maybe it applies to other people. But it didn’t apply to me, because I knew I was accomplished.” “I had the background and experience to get the job done. I didn’t feel like I would be exposed as a fraud at all! And I also started to explore my feelings in those spaces. Was it really me who had persistent doubts—or did people who didn’t look like me and were the majority in those places express doubts in my ability either explicitly or implicitly? It became clear that, in fact, my malaise came from outside of me, from the hostile spaces I stepped into.” “After putting my experience in context, I decided to stop referring to myself as having “imposter syndrome.” The truth of the matter was that I didn’t feel like an imposter. I had been TREATED like one. I had internalized the message that I was a fraud when I was Black girl magic personified!” “Not referring to myself as having “imposter syndrome” and walking in the power that I wasn’t one (and never had been) changed my life. It’s not to say that I don’t have fears, but I am aware of my strengths and my power. And the things I don’t know, I can work on to get better.” “However, I know that the statistics about imposter syndrome as a phenomenon that many women feel they are experiencing are staggering. The effects of this feeling are real, regardless of my claim that it’s not our own feelings that lead to imposter syndrome. It’s the fact that we are TREATED like imposters that leads to these feelings of doubt when we navigate predominantly white spaces.” #storytelling #culture #education #motivation #whatinspiresme

I’m reading Elizabeth Leiba’s book on Kindle, “I’m Not Yelling: A Black Woman’s Guide to Navigating the Workplace”, and everything she’s experienced is resonating with me. ?I’ve been there, done that, and had it done to me! ?The tactics used and the negative holistic effects of bias, discrimination, and racism are the same everywhere, with all of us and it hurts; it’s universal. ?Let’s stop #bias,#discrimination, and #racism in the workplace. Believe us, it’s a real thing! Elizabeth Leiba , thank you for putting the experiences many of us face daily at work into words. Please continue to be a voice for us.
