??????Black History Month Dedication to Altadena: Octavia Butler Did you know Octavia E. Butler ???was born in Pasadena and grew up in the black neighborhoods of Pasadena and Altadena? Octavia E. Butler was a renowned African American Science Fiction author.??? Growing up, Butler experienced intense discrimination and found solace in books and science fiction. Her most well known work is “Parable of the Sower”, a futuristic novel based on a dystopian tale of Los Angeles. It challenged discrimination, climate change, inequality, etc. Butler passed away in 2006, but her work has continued to impact today’s society. Butler is buried at Mountain View Mortuary & Cemetery, Altadena, California. After the Eaton Fire, her gravesite still stands. Butler believed in change and perseverance, something the black community is no stranger to. Black in Mayberry is dedicating Black History Month to Altadena, CA.
