I am so pleased to announce that I have received a distinguished presentation award for my poster entitled “Good things take thyme: Volatile secondary compounds enhance nodulation in black-eyed pea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.” This award given by at the Black In Environment conference is my first ever research presentation award so I am extremely proud of this accomplishment and hope it is the first of many along my research journey. I’d like to thank the co-founders Regan F. Patterson, Ph.D. and Dominic Bednar, Ph.D., EIT for providing me a platform for research, my co-investigator Dr. Mary McKenna for her mentorship, and Ron Smith, Tracey R. Holmes, M.S., Sika Odoom, J. Elijah Bratton, Destini Partin and the rest of my Karsh STEM family for always pushing me to one standard — excellence!

Two of our distinguished panelists include: Anea Moore: A Rhodes Scholar and an incoming law student at Penn Carey Law. She holds two master's degrees from Oxford University and has explored her policy and social impact interests through serving as the Deputy Policy Director for Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and as an AI for Social Impact Program Manager at Google. As an undergraduate at Penn, Anea shifted her focus from pre-med to sociology and urban studies, discovering a passion for innovative and effective approaches to law and public policy that center historically disadvantaged people. Her dedication to community engagement and public policy has been recognized through her prestigious Truman and Rhodes Scholarships. Dr. Regan F. Patterson: The Co-Founder of Black in Environment and an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is the Principal Investigator of the Engineering Environmental Justice Lab. Previously, Dr. Patterson was the Transportation Equity Research Fellow at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) and a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research. She earned her PhD in Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research interests include air quality, sustainable transportation, community engagement, and environmental justice. Please join us for this impactful discussion.
