关于我们
Black Girl Environmentalist is a national community dedicated to empowering Black girls, women and non-binary people in the climate movement. We create pathways for emerging climate leaders of color to thrive across environmental disciplines through the areas of: community building, green workforce development, and narrative change. BGE was founded by climate activist and Rhodes Scholar Wawa Gatheru. Having been in the environmental and climate space for almost ten years, Wawa could not help but notice that while Black girls and women exist at the forefront of environmental injustice, they were amongst the least supported or celebrated in the mainstream environmental movement. She founded BGE to help cultivate opportunities for BGE's to be supported and empowered. BGE is collectively committed to centering Black women and non-binary folks in the environmental movement while shifting inequitable power structures that create barriers to access environmental disciplines. Our ultimate goal is to help create a climate movement made in the image of all of us.

Like other Sustain Our Future initiatives, our Reparative Land Collective began as a desire to disrupt business-as-usual sustainable development. We held a vision that under-resourced land stewards, like Black, Indigenous, Brown, other land stewards of color, and others, could become central actors in delivering nature-based solutions for carbon removal. Through countless conversations and research spearheaded by my brilliant colleague Aissa Dearing, we brought this vision to life. We are so proud to announce the first round of grants through our Reparative Land Collective. These grants will support efforts in agroecology and ecosystem restoration while evoking the framework of land reMatriation. This first wave of grantmaking represents our initial step in reframing carbon dioxide removal practices to center frontline community-driven land healing, restoration, and repair. ???? ?? ?? ?? Get to know our grantee partners and learn more about our Reparative Land Collective in the announcement below!
We have another exciting announcement to share before the year ends! Today, Sustain Our Future Foundation launches the Reparative Land Collective Grant Program to advance transformative land stewardship. ???? ?? We are proud to announce our inaugural cohort of grantee partners for the Reparative Land Collective, a grant program created to support under-resourced land stewards, such as Black, Indigenous, Brown, other land stewards of color, and others, dedicated to ecosystem restoration and land justice. This first cohort includes 12 visionary organizations from across the U.S., each awarded for their leadership in land healing and agroecological goals. Alongside capital grants, these organizations will receive critical technical assistance such as legal advising, land assessments, permitting, and infrastructure planning to amplify their impact. The Reparative Land Collective embodies SOFF’s commitment to restoring humanity’s relationship with natural ecosystems through land ReMatriation, centering communities most affected by systemic injustices. As BlackTooEarth, one of our grantees, shares: “It’s time to reclaim land near communities most impacted by food deserts and Atlanta’s efforts to displace Black and Native folks. Through the Reparative Land Collective, we are working on a Southeast Atlanta land acquisition effort to challenge the city's decision to build Cop City, creating a community-centered space that promotes food sovereignty and ecological restoration.” We’re proud to stand in solidarity with these incredible partners, and we thank our community advisory board, composed of BIPOC-led organizations, for co-creating a vision for transformative land stewardship. Check out the full list of our inspiring grantee partners and the impactful work they’re leading: ?? Help For Landowners Organization (SC) ?? National Black Food and Justice Alliance (GA) ?? Savanna Institute (WI) ?? Center for Heirs' Property Preservation (SC) ?? San Diego New Roots (CA) ?? Great Plains Action Society (IA) ?? BlackTooEarth (GA) ?? Sanctuary Farms (MI) ?? The Earthseed Land Collective (NC) ?? Ukwakhwa Foods (Oneida Reservation) ?? Hmong American Farmers Association (MN) ?? Elderberry Wisdom Farm (OR) Let’s celebrate this community of land healers and their journey to rebuild ecosystems and nurture resilient, thriving communities! ?? ?? Excited to Share! ?? A few months ago, my incredible friends Lorena J. and Maya Espinosa reached out to me about an exciting opportunity: starting a Charlotte hub for Black Girl Environmentalist (BGE). As someone who finds peace and healing in nature, believes in the transformative power of community, and has a deep love for leadership, I was thrilled to join them in making this vision a reality. I’m beyond proud to share that our hub was approved, and we recently held our first team introduction meeting a few weeks ago, along with our first official interest meeting last week. Lorena & Maya are amazing co-leads and I’ve already learned so much from them. Black Girl Environmentalist is a national organization that not only uplifts Black women and femmes in environmentalism but also creates spaces where our voices, experiences, and contributions to this field are celebrated and empowered. Joining this team feels like the perfect blend of my passions: fostering connections, advocating for our environment, and creating a space for healing and growth through nature. I can’t wait to work with this incredible team and see what we can accomplish together. Here’s to building something beautiful for Charlotte and beyond! ?? #BlackGirlEnvironmentalist #CommunityBuilding #Leadership #HealingThroughNature #EnvironmentalJustice

The event ended with a yoga session and an opportunity to decompress. ????♀? ???? Thank you to Janani for the great pictures ?? and Cara Anderson for hosting this event
