New Center for Effective Philanthropy research reveals that “worries about current and future funding levels as well as changing funder priorities are top of mind for nonprofit leaders, who are looking for larger and more unrestricted support in this uncertain time...” More information below:
NEW CEP RESEARCH: Nonprofit organizations report difficulty carrying out their mission-focused work as the overwhelming majority say they are experiencing a negative impact from the current U.S. political climate. Following a series of policies and pronouncements from the new administration that target the nonprofit sector, CEP surveyed nonprofit leaders to understand how rapidly shifting policies and the current political climate were affecting their work - and what they need from their funders right now. We report our findings in a new Research Snapshot, out today. Nwamaka Agbo, MPA's question, 'Are social movements truly ready to engage with Black women in power?' is a critical one. It forces us to confront our own biases and assumptions. This article is a valuable contribution to the ongoing dialogue about power, equity, and leadership. Her experience of navigating power and the shifting dynamics of relationships is something many of us can relate to. Thank you, Nwamaka, for your courage in writing and sharing this article!

Resource: Tides Guide to Including Community Driven Voices in Social Impact Work (link below) — This resource from Tides resonates deeply with the values and mission of Black Funders Network - especially in our commitment to advocating for equitable and community-driven philanthropy. These principles are not just best practices, they are fundamental to dismantling systemic barriers and fostering authentic, impactful change within our organizations and the communities we serve. By embodying these values, we move beyond transactional funding and towards transformative partnerships that truly empower progress.
When social impact work includes community voices, everyone wins. But it's not just about the who — it's about the how. 1. Build reciprocity into the process:?Offer meaningful compensation when appropriate and explore opportunities to share back learnings, facilitate connections, and provide a platform to uplift participants’ work. 2. Center the voices of the most marginalized: Think critically about who is in the room and which perspectives are prioritized. Ask: who’s missing? 3. Create a safe, comfortable, accessible environment:?Ask participants about accessibility considerations upfront; this may include disability accommodations, caregiving needs, and dietary preferences. Use language that is tailored to the audience. Host events in central, welcoming community spaces. 4. Place relationships first: Create space for participants to get to know each other as people and as professionals. Model the engagement you want to see. Provide ways to stay connected. 5. Prioritize participants’ experience. Ask:?If I were a participant, what would make this a valuable use of my time?
