On November 13th, Black farmers in New York State gathered at Vassar Barns in Poughkeepsie, NY for the Institutional & Private Market Access skillshare. Hosted by Community Food Advocates, attendees learned about various public and private market opportunities, essential certifications and licensing requirements, effective procurement strategies, and the importance of building strong relationships within the food industry. This skillshare was made possible by a USDA SARE Northeast Grant focused on Building and Strengthening Social and Economic Sustainability Among NY State Black Farmers. This is a collaborative grant and associated skillshares are being led by Black Farmer Fund, Buffalo Go Green, Farm School NYC, Food for the Spirit, and NEFOC Land Trust. ? #BlackFarmers #FoodJustice #MarketAccess #Skillshare #NewYorkState #NYAgriculture

We were excited to return to Food Funded East this month! Hosted by Slow Money NYC, this event brings together food entrepreneurs and investors to catalyze capital flow for Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (JEDI) in our food and ag system. It was a day filled with inspiring conversations, innovative ideas, and delicious food! Our Investment Director, Charles Wade, was a featured panelist for the Capital Mixer Panel, where they discussed the various types of funding available and how they can best support the needs of food businesses. We're excited to continue connecting with the vibrant food community in New York and beyond, and look forward to supporting the next generation of food innovators. #FoodFundedEast #FoodBusiness #Investment #NYC #SlowMoneyNYC #FoodEntrepreneur #FoodInnovation #FoodSystem #FoodSecurity

We recently attended the 12th annual Black Farmers and Urban Gardeners (BUGs) Conference in Houston, where we connected with inspiring Black farmers and food system leaders from across the country. Their passion, dedication, and resilience left a lasting impression. On Friday, we immersed ourselves in Houston's vibrant Black agricultural scene during the Urban Farm tour. This momentum carried into Saturday, as the BUGs conference kicked off with a powerful opening ceremony featuring BFF and BUGs cofounder, Karen Washington, setting the stage for a weekend of learning and connection. The day continued with workshops and presentations delving into critical issues Black land sovereignty, food justice, and economic sustainability. Our Community Engagement Manager, Sonja Lockhart supported the "Building Up & Building Out" workshop, hosted by the ecosystem which focused on different aspects of business development and growth in the agricultural industry. The conference closed with a powerful session hosted by the National Black Food and Justice Alliance, encouraging regional solidarity and fostering long-lasting connections among Black food system leaders. We're thrilled to have sponsored 7 talented Black food actors from the BFF community to attend the BUGS conference! Investing in the next generation of leaders is essential, and we're honored to support their growth and development. Huge thanks to Black Urban Growers for organizing such an impactful event. We can't wait for the next one! #BlackFarmers #UrbanGardeners #FoodJustice #Community #bugsconference2024

Recently, BFF staff gathered for our annual strategic planning retreat. After two days of intense brainstorming and collaboration, our team identified key opportunities and challenges. This year, leadership coach Kim Mitchell led us in a powerful session centered in values-based strategic planning. We also defined clear priorities and a roadmap to achieve our goals for the upcoming year, setting the stage for even greater impact on Black agricultural and food entrepreneurs in the Northeast and beyond. We are grateful for this time to reflect and grow together, equipping BFF with a clear vision and a renewed commitment to our mission.
