Adding to the of end of year reviews!?? What I enjoy most about working in the art and culture scene is that each project leads to new areas to discover, with an incredible range of texts, mediums and materials to do so. Sharing here a selection of highlights from 2024, which led to some of the most interesting learning opportunities: 1. Cláudio Garrudo exhibited a series of works at Photo London 2024, presented by Galeria das Salgadeiras. Exploring the subject of skin as an evolving site of memory, the works reveal the reverse of old drawings, where pigments and fluids have seeped through the paper over time and at different speeds - captured by his unique photographic process. I attended Photo London for the first time this year, and as an ex-photography student, thoroughly enjoyed re-imaging and exploring the different interpretations of the medium. 2. A heart-warming celebration of Ghanaian painter and educator, Professor Ablade Glover’s 90th birthday, held at October Gallery. Such a rare and valuable occasion, to be able to uncover the motivations and discipline of an artist, who after 9 decades, remains so passionate about his craft. 3. Lofty Spot’s inaugural installation in partnership with Black Curatorial Ltd hosted at Black Eats LDN. Showcasing the works of British-Nigerian artist Jemila Isa, the miniature paintings depict imagined, playful scenes of a homeland (Nigeria) that Isa is deeply connected to, but has never visited. A complex, emotional experience; unique to those born and raised in the diaspora, with a deep curiosity about the distant histories and contemporary realities that they’re invariably connected to. Working with Jemila and the team in the weeks surrounding the presentation, it was wonderful to engage in some of the conversations that her works sparked (+ the food over the weekend was an obvious plus). 4. Lastly, the textile-focused exhibition, ‘Unravel: The power and politics of textiles in art,’ at the Barbican Centre. It was so fascinating to consider the world through these materials, in their varying appearances and functions. And, retrospectively, it was especially moving to have seen the works of Faith Ringgold in person?? Wishing you an incredible 2025 and would love to catch-up & connect!

We had our last Black Eats Gallery Pop up of the year last weekend and it was truly a beautiful experience. What a beautiful weekend of vibes, first time art buyers and investing in black businesses. Everyone who came through and supported you are loved so so much. It really affirmed why I curate and do the work we do at Black Curatorial Ltd. People brought prints, cried at the artworks, instantly recognized their ends in the photography, were flabbergasted by the photos on Organza chiffon by our beloved Adama Jalloh and young curators came to ask questions about curating and crits of their work ?? The work we curate will always be for the peoplesdem, not for the other artists or institutions but for people in their everyday to be moved by the capturing of the beauty of the lives we live all over the world. Black Artists to the world ?? Black Curators to the world ?? Black Art to the world ?? Big up Adama Jalloh, Rochelle Dalphinis Myah Jeffers, Akilah Watts, Alanis Forde & Paul Majek for exhibiting with us over the last couple months. Thank to our artists for exhibiting with us and any enquiries for prints or available work can be made via emailing me or DM’ing Black Curatorial. [email protected]

Leader in the visual arts curating exhibitions and programmes, and supporting meaningful strategic and creative growth within the UK cultural sector.

In my previous post, I shared details about an international travel bursary I received last year, courtesy of Black Curatorial Ltd and led by Aliyah Hasinah. Building on that,I will be doing a series of reflections on how international travel has influenced my career over nearly a decade and the importance of having resources that support travel for curators and cultural programmers. I firmly believe in the principle of Think Global, Act Local, as much of my work—whether it be programmes, exhibitions, or collaborations, has been enriched by my global experiences. The world, though vast, often feels surprisingly interconnected, offering numerous opportunities to learn and apply new insights within our own communities. Who is this for? Maybe its for organisations who have the means to fund initiatives that support travel for curators and artists or those who hold the purse strings within organisations to do this for their employees, but may not fully understand the benefits of mobility. Or maybe for those who are contemplating taking the leap to apply for a funded opportunity but are unsure or hesitant. My hope is that this reflection proves valuable, inspiring you to explore the transformative potential of global experiences in your own work and those of employees and colleagues.

  • In 2025 we’ll be back with more exhibitions, events and pop ups!
