Seeks to improve Black Maternal Health through promotion of Healthcare Advocacy and Holistic Community Support.
关于我们
BCFSM? is a 501c3 nonprofit organization established by a group of committed birth justice activists to promote healthcare advocacy education in the black community. https://linktr.ee/BCFSM?utm_source=linktree_profile_share<sid=7c1de27b-0d84-4ab1-897a-55850b93c8e8 The idea for BCFSM? arose out of the partnership between Drs. Leslie Farrington and Laurie Zephyrin, who are Black Obstetricians. Both believe that Black birthing people and their supporters can take ownership of maternal health experiences by vetting prenatal and birthing services, choosing providers who give respectful and person-centered care, amplifying their voices, and partnering with their medical team. BCFSM? is proud to promote the ACTT Curriculum, which was created by Black women for Black birthing people. Nurses, obstetricians, midwives, doulas, and community members have collaborated to offer a powerful healthcare advocacy toolkit, which anyone in the community can use to help improve the pregnancy, birth and post birth outcomes of Black families. BCFSM? uses birthing people and Moms interchangeably, and it recognizes that people of all genders may have the capacity for pregnancy and birth.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, we are very clear that awareness doesn't end when November begins. So, today we want to spotlight the journeys of Keisha and Maya—fictional characters inspired by real-life stories. Their experiences reflect the urgent need for patient advocacy, inclusive clinical research, and better representation in healthcare. ?? Black women are 38% more likely to die from breast cancer (American Cancer Society, 2024). ?? Black maternal mortality rates are three times higher than those of White women (CDC, 2024). Additional Disparities in Breast Cancer and Maternal Health: - Hispanic women are less likely to be diagnosed early, leading to worse outcomes (American Cancer Society, 2024). - Native American women experience significantly higher maternal mortality rates compared to White women (CDC, 2024). - Asian American women are underrepresented in clinical trials, limiting research insights into their healthcare needs (American Cancer Society, 2024). Learn how PEP!IN and partners like Black Coalition For Safe Motherhood, Inc. are beginning to work together to be a bridge to help lessen these gaps by empowering patients, training advocates, and building sustainable partnerships. This #WorldMentalHealthDay and #NationalDepressionScreeningDay, it's critical that we recognize the importance of open, honest patient and provider conversations during pregnancy and through the first year after birth. For women experiencing symptoms of #postpartumdepression (PPD), timely screening at multiple touchpoints during the postpartum period can be a crucial first step in diagnosing PPD.
