  • The Naval Cemetery Landscape is the result of many talented folks. These photos remind us that spring is not too far away.

In collaboration with Marvel Architects and Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, LWLA consulted on the design of 1.7 acres of memorial grounds to honor those who came before while serving as a key node of today’s 26-mile Brooklyn Greenway Initiative. A relic of the past married to a symbol of the present. Meticulously selected plant life transformed the surroundings into a habitat ripe for pollinators and migratory birds, creating a vibrant, inviting landscape used for quiet reflection, wildlife observation, art installations and educational events. Join GreenHomeNYC on January 15th for presentations, networking and Q&A! We're kicking off 2025 with our annual Green Catwalk Forum featuring an eclectic lineup of sustainability professionals. This is a great opportunity to learn about new technologies, innovations, and policies happening in the New York City environmental sustainability and green infrastructure sphere. Presentations will be slightly shorter than normal to allow for all of our speakers to have the spotlight on the catwalk. Our panel speakers will talk about recent projects in a range of industries and share their insights into the latest on topics such as tracking protected bike lanes, floating solar installations, financing climate action and more. Presenters for this event include: Tim Ponciano: Leveraging blended and braided financing models to drive local climate action Cecilia Cheng: Sustainable coffee production Gilberto Arribas: Floating solar installations Brandon Chamberlin: Tracking New York City's progress on their protected bike lane requirement of 50 miles per year Hunter Armstrong: Brooklyn Greenway Initiative Martha Gutierrez: Snapshot of the most recommended and impactful measures for improving energy efficiency in low-income multifamily buildings across New York ?? ?? • BGI's vision of a waterfront greenway was adopted as a goal of the city government with the release of 2012 Implementation Plan (NYC DOT). Since then, steady progress has been made towards the projects identified by the plan - the latest will establish a connection between Sunset Park and Red Hook suitable for walking, running, and biking. We're anxious for the ribbon-cutting later this year!

  • Here at BGI, we are committed to transforming New York City’s waterfront into a connected network of greenways, providing users with a climate-resilient option for navigating the five boroughs on wheels or on foot. To celebrate Giving Tuesday, BGI’s Board of Directors will double your impact by matching up to $10,000 donated from now until the end of the year. https://lnkd.in/gwjexnKC When you donate, you will be supporting: -Advocacy to complete the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway (we have seven miles to go!) -The environmental stewardship of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, ensuring invasive weeds and litter are removed from the path -Operations of the Naval Cemetery Landscape, a 1.5 acre pollinator meadow and historic site that habitats over 75 species of birds and hundreds of insects species -The New York City Greenways Coalition, a collective of 45+ organizations invested in building greenways in all five boroughs -Research projects like the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway Usership Study, which monitors who and how is using the greenway and how NYC can most equitably support them Twenty years ago, a group of neighbors in the Columbia Street Waterfront District of Brooklyn came together because they wanted a safe, carbon-friendly way to get around on foot and on wheels in their local community. Their advocacy led to two decades of wins across New York City, ensuring greenways are built, maintained, and supported by local leaders and policymakers. Donate today, on Giving Tuesday, to help BGI raise $20,000 for our 20th year. No matter what is going on in the city and the country, BGI has tirelessly advocated for this vital public infrastructure, and we vow to continue to do so! We cannot do it without your support.

  • Thank you to the team at Goldman Sachs for another great #CommunityTeamWorks Day stewarding the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway - this time in Sunset Park! Volunteers collected trash and weeds, keeping the greenway safe, clean, and supportive of the biodiverse ecosystems who inhabit it! We’re looking forward to more greenway access coming to Sunset Park, and can’t wait to see you all walking, biking, and enjoying more miles of the BWG! Thank you again to the team at Goldman Sachs for your hard work!

  • Thanks to everyone that joined the NYC Greenways Coalition and Brooklyn Greenway Initiative at the 2024 summit last week! It was an engaging and informative two days with Coalition members, community stakeholders, government leaders, and planners... capped later in the day with the fantastic news of the $96 million federal investment in the Inwood Greenway. Let's keep up the momentum!
