Reasons why CMOs get fired (says ADWEEK): 1. The inability to deliver promised results.? 2. A failure to adapt.? 3. A failure to earn the leadership team’s respect. 69% of CEOs and CFOs said a CMO’s “inability to deliver promised results” would lead to their termination, according to?Gartner research?cited by ADWEEK cited by Marketing Brew cited by ourselves, making it the main reason why marketers are fired. We work with CMOs daily; they are the primary decision-makers we target for our #digitalPR services, and we're in the trenches with them. So why is there a disconnect between leadership and marketers? Here are three gaps we see between these two camps: 1. The Results Gap - we have misaligned expectations and muddied metrics. CEOs and CFOs heavily prioritize demonstrable (fun word to say) ROI. They often expect marketing to translate directly and immediately into sales figures. Just like working out, this is not 8-minute abs. Performance takes discipline, buy-in, and time. With that said, we can speak to CEOs/CFOS and operate with a results-oriented mindset driven by quantifiable data. Make sure to track your results. 2. The Adaptation Gap - there's resistance to change and innovation. Leadership can be resistant to adopting new technologies or strategies, clinging to outdated approaches, i.e., "We've always done it this way!" We humans are prone to confirmation bias, favoring information that confirms our existing beliefs. Leaders may be reluctant to embrace marketing innovations that challenge the established ways of doing things . The disconnect is that CMOs are expected to stay ahead of marketing trends but then face resistance when proposing innovative strategies. Conservative leaders are often hesitant to invest in unproven technologies or approaches, especially if there's a financial risk component. The result is a stifled marketing team that lives in a constant state of stagnation. 3. The Respect Gap - a lack of shared understanding and communication. CMOs struggle mightily with capturing leadership's attention, which can lead to the failure to earn leadership's respect and highlight a breakdown in communication and trust. Leaders often don't understand the complexities of modern marketing, particularly in the digital realm. I've flat-out been told by an engineer that they didn't need marketing because they did all the work. Cognitive biases definitely play a role. Leadership can think of marketing as the fluff rather than a strategic business function. It can lead to a lack of buy-in to marketing strategies and a dismissal of CMOs' broad expertise. However, CMOs, who are juggling so many marketing responsibilities, are struggling to communicate their strategies in a way that resonates with the financial-focused language of leadership.
