REFLECTING ON A SEMESTER OF GROWTH WITH BIUST ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDS CLUB (BESC) As the first semester of the BIUST Environmental Stewards Club (BESC) has drawn to a close, we take a moment to reflect on our journey, achievements, and lessons learned. It has been an exciting period filled with opportunities for growth, engagement, and laying the foundation for a more impactful future. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEMESTER: Webinar with Ofentse Wena Lesego: On the 10th of October, BESC hosted a thought-provoking webinar featuring environmental advocate Ofentse Wena Lesego. Ofentse is a master's student at the University of Botswana, focusing on the implications of land use and land cover changes on flood risk. He is also a member of the Student Network at the School for Climate Studies at Stellenbosch University. The discussion centered around sustainable practices in environmental science and the role of youth in driving meaningful change. The event was a tremendous success, inspiring our members to think critically about how we can contribute to environmental preservation in our communities. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ofentse for generously sharing his expertise and inspiring us with his passion and commitment to sustainability. His contributions have left a lasting impact on our club and its members. While the semester was a learning curve, we were able to create impactful flyers to commemorate significant environmental dates which were shared with the members, including: World Ozone Day: Highlighting the importance of protecting the ozone layer and mitigating harmful emissions. International Day of Climate Action: Calling for proactive steps to combat climate change and urging our community to act. World Soil Day: Emphasizing the critical role of soil health in maintaining ecosystems and ensuring food security. Though intended for a wider audience, these educational materials were an essential first step in our commitment to raising awareness through digital platforms like LinkedIn. The semester began as a slow start for BESC, but the experiences have strengthened our resolve to be more active and engaging in the coming months. We’re excited to roll out new initiatives, foster collaborations, and host impactful events that align with our mission of environmental stewardship. To our members, supporters, and partners: thank you for being part of our journey. Your encouragement fuels our ambition to make a difference. We’re optimistic about the semester ahead and look forward to growing together in our pursuit of a sustainable future. #BESC #EnvironmentalStewardship #Sustainability #YouthInAction
