We are excited to announce the release of our latest report, “MiCAR: The Institutional Playbook for Europe’s Digital Asset Market,†sponsored by Zodia Custody. Europe’s digital asset sector is undergoing a period of rapid transformation, with the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) at the forefront of this - harmonising crypto-asset policies across the EU, driving regulatory clarity and accelerating institutional adoption. In this report, we explore the key trends shaping the European digital asset market, including the growth of EUR-fiat trading activity, the rise of MiCAR-compliant stablecoins, the performance of European exchanges, and the increasing role of regulated custodians and other institutional services that are helping to create the foundations of a robust digital asset offering in Europe. Key findings: ??EUR-fiat trading volumes surged by 74.3% year-on-year, increasing from €14.38 billion to €25.07 billion per month, surpassing €300 billion in annualised volume. ??Since January 2022, EUR-fiat dominance has ranged between a low of 4.89% in August 2022 and a high of 9.17% in December 2022. As of November 2024, EUR-fiat dominance stands at 6.66%, slightly below the 2024 yearly average of 7.34%. ??MiCAR-compliant stablecoins account for 5.8% of overall market trading volumes, which although relatively small, may act as a catalyst for their growth, particularly as exchanges look to comply within the European market. ??Despite Europe’s 135 ETP offerings, institutional inflows remain overshadowed by the US, where Spot Bitcoin ETFs drove a 2207% growth in AUM in 2024, compared to 104% in Europe.
