Data Product vs. Data Contract: What’s the Difference? Data contracts and data products are like inseparable cousins — always working together, always aligned, and always making sure things run smoothly. One ensures that data is structured, reliable, and consistent, while the other packages and delivers that data for valuable consumption. If data were a factory, data contracts would be the quality control process, ensuring that only properly formatted, high-quality materials enter production. Meanwhile, data products would be the final packaged goods, ready for consumers to use and trust. The mission of Bitol is to foster a set of standards to define data contracts, data products, and more to tackle multiple data engineering challenges, such as data normalization, ensuring the relevance of documentation, establishing service-level expectations, simplifying data and tool integration, and promoting a data product-oriented approach. Bitol is a Linux Foundation AI & Data sandbox project under the Apache 2.0 license. Currently, it defines an open standard for data contracts called Open Data Contract Standard (ODCS).

?? Defining Data Products: A Community Effort ?? At Data Day Texas, I had the privilege of moderating a discussion about one of the hottest (and most debated) topics in data management: What exactly is a data product? No pressure, right? ?? With thought leaders like Malcolm Hawker, Bethany Lyons, Ryan Dolley, Lisa N. Cao, Yoann Benoit, Joe Reis, Juan Sequeda, and others in the room, the conversation was dynamic, insightful, and (unsurprisingly) nuanced. It became clear that defining a data product isn’t as simple as it seems—it’s a multidimensional challenge, blending perspectives from product management, engineering, and data governance. After much debate (and a lot of $26 coffee ?), I proposed a definition that aims to unify these perspectives while leaving room for innovation and community feedback.
