The moat on the foundation model is relatively low so far.
The capital required to build platforms has increased exponentially due to the different resources required to build and operate them: - OSes (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android) predominantly required developers. Microsoft raised a modest $1m, and Apple raised $3.5m in venture funding. - Search/Social (Google, Facebook) required developers, scientists/researchers, and operating/CPU cloud infrastructure. Google raised $36m, and Facebook raised about $480m (excluding pre-IPO rounds) - LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic) require developers, scientists/researchers (expensive ones), training clouds (expensive ones), and inference/operating clouds (expensive ones). OpenAI has raised $11B, and Anthropic has raised $8B, and it is just the beginning. OSes had moats with their app ecosystems. Search/Social had a moat via the network effect. LLMs have no moat, and it's an all-out price war (among dominant players, 3rd or 4th in the rank possibly has no chance of survival). Switching LLMs is easier than the OS, Search, Social, or Cloud. Let that sink in!! The Foundation Model business is beginning to look like the airline business. :-) #economics101 #genai #llm
