Fraudsters are constantly evolving their tactics to manipulate unsuspecting victims. Here are a few helpful tips to avoid becoming a potential target of, or victim to, fraud: # Never create an account or use virtual currency addresses provided by a third party, unless you have independently verified their legitimacy. # Never share your account login credentials or two-factor authentication codes with anyone, including those claiming to be support representatives. # Be wary of unsolicited requests for remote access to your accounts, links, or apps from purported support representatives. # Verify their identity through official channels before granting access. # Never transfer funds from your investment accounts to “protect” them from alleged scams or hacks. Trusted institutions will never instruct you to move your funds in this manner. # Exercise extreme caution when interacting with individuals you've met online, especially if they request financial information or transactions. Romance is a common tactic used by fraudsters. # Be cautious of online relationships where the person claims to be highly successful and offers to share investing secrets or large sums of money. This could be a "pig butchering" scam, where the scammer slowly gains your trust and convinces you to invest, only to disappear with your funds. Promises of quick profits or unsolicited requests to send cryptocurrency are often indicators of a scam. # Avoid any arrangement that involves receiving and transferring money from unknown sources, even if it's portrayed as a legitimate work-from-home opportunity. These "money mule" scams often involve laundering illegally obtained funds, which can have severe legal consequences. Staying vigilant and following these best practices can help protect you from falling victim to fraudulent schemes. Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it likely is.

High-Risk Online Platforms Cryptocurrencies offer a fast, sometimes anonymous, way for users to send and receive money to and from others around the globe. The same attributes that make them attractive to everyday people also make them exploitable to fraudsters, scammers, and other types of criminals. It’s important to be aware that while this new technology can greatly improve the global financial system, bad actors exist, and are always trying to take advantage of retail users and institutions alike. Please exercise caution when transacting, many types of venues leave users especially vulnerable to interacting with criminals. Below is a list of dangerous venue types, as observed by the US Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN https://www.fincen.gov/): Darknet Marketplaces- These anonymized marketplaces frequently include offers for the sale of illicit goods and services, and often accept cryptocurrency payments, sometimes as the sole payment method. Unregistered Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Exchangers- Individuals or entities offering to exchange fiat currencies for virtual currencies or one virtual currency for another virtual currency. These exchangers usually operate informally, typically advertising and marketing their services through online classified advertisements, online forums, social media, and word of mouth. They may further anonymize transactions through “mixing”- blending the proceeds of multiple transactions from multiple users together. Unregistered Foreign-Located MSBs (Money Service Businesses)- Similar to P2Ps, these platforms may offer to exchange fiat and digital assets. They may also allow money to be sent to other users around the globe. Often, they are based in jurisdictions with less stringent Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CFT) laws, but still allow US users to transact. Convertible Virtual Currency (CVC) ATMs/Kiosks- These are ATM-like devices or electronic terminals that allow users to exchange cash and virtual currency. CVC kiosks generally facilitate money transmission between a CVC exchange and a customer’s wallet, or operate as a CVC exchange themselves. Some of these kiosks follow AML/CFT laws properly, while some do not collect the necessary user information and provide criminals with another method to anonymously move value between fiat and CVCs.
