The Bitcoin Summit in Ethiopia Nestled in the Ethiopian Highlands, Addis Ababa - known for its breathtaking landscapes, tremendous history and best coffee on this planet - recently hosted a significant Bitcoin Summit for the Bitcoin industry. Organized by Kal Kassa, the event highlighted Ethiopia's growing role in the global Bitcoin ecosystem. Kal, through his open-source initiative BitcoinBirr.org, has become a leading figure in advancing Bitcoin education and fostering innovation in Ethiopia and beyond. The vast potential this big country has to offer with its abundant hydropower, drew a mix of local entrepreneurs and international guests to discuss Bitcoin’s transformative role in Ethiopia's economy. A highlight was Ray Youssef’s passionate keynote on Africa’s economic struggles, emphasizing how inefficient money flows have hindered development. His vision for Bitcoin as a tool to empower African communities electrified the audience and sparked inspiring discussions about the continent’s future. African Bitcoin Ecosystem Surges by 67% in Just One Year!? ?? A new report from African Bitcoiners, reviewing the growth of Bitcoin adoption across Africa, reveals an exponential rise in Bitcoin projects over the past 18 months. Since the launch of the first edition of the African Bitcoin Ecosystem Infographic on April 19, 2023, the continent has witnessed an unprecedented surge in Bitcoin initiatives, marking a significant leap in financial innovation and technological advancement. Initially, the infographic highlighted 36 Bitcoin projects across Africa. Just six months later, in October 2023, the number of Bitcoin-focused initiatives skyrocketed to 73 projects, representing a 102.78% growth. This dramatic increase underscored the accelerating momentum of Bitcoin adoption in the region. Fast forward to today, African Bitcoiners' latest report confirms 122? Bitcoin projects spanning 19 African countries, reflecting a 67% growth over the past year. This milestone highlights the expanding influence of Bitcoin across the continent, with the infographic now mapping the geographical locations of these Bitcoin-only projects. According to the survey and geographical mapping, Sub-Saharan Africa remains the dominant region for Bitcoin adoption. East Africa has experienced the most significant growth, with 8 countries now represented in the infographic. West Africa, led by Nigeria, also shows significant growth, with the number of projects increasing from 7 to 20. South Africa leads in absolute numbers, growing to 28 Bitcoin projects, up from 12 over the same period. Kenya has seen steady growth, increasing from 11 projects to 15 in just one year. Central and South Africa now each have 2 countries actively participating, and North Africa contributes 1 country to the Bitcoin ecosystem. ??? Among individual nations, South Africa leads with the highest number of Bitcoin projects at 28, followed by Nigeria with 21 projects, and Kenya with 15 projects, showing consistent growth across the continent. In terms of project categories, the largest number of initiatives are centered around Bitcoin community projects, which focus on education and building circular economies. These grassroots efforts are key drivers of Bitcoin knowledge and adoption, empowering local communities with decentralized financial tools. This latest edition of the African Bitcoin Ecosystem Infographic, developed by African Bitcoiners, provides a comprehensive view of the evolving Bitcoin landscape, underscoring Africa's growing leadership in Bitcoin-driven financial innovation.
