Alabama Community College System had a great trip to Danville, VA today with the US Navy Maritime Industrial Base Program. I was hooked on this place immediately after visiting it the first time with Michael Garner and hearing Troy Simpson speak with so much passion on its inception and commitment to the Navy. I told the story every time I had the chance. But little did I know that I’d be back in a brand new capacity doing incredibly important work for the US Navy only a few short years later. It’s time for Alabama to step up to the maritime plate for our country, and it’s going to take intentional training, support mechanisms, and leadership to accomplish this mission. We have the right people, the expertise, the experience, and the energy in place to get it done. It was fantastic to have so many brilliant leaders from both Alabama and Danville in one place today to collaborate, learn about Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM), and tour the country’s most impressive training ecosystem for the defense industrial base. If you haven't heard of GLAM Girls Learning About Manufacturing, it's about time you learn about the engaging, hands-on program. “The mission of GLAM is really simple," says Robin Ricks, who is the Founder and Executive Director of the program. "We want to create interest in careers in manufacturing among the next generation of women who are going to enter the workforce.” Bishop State Community College is a key partner in this endeavor. "I definitely feel big pride about Bishop being a part of GLAM," said Akareem Spears, who is Director of Workforce and Economic Development at the college.
