“At Bishop Museum, culture is not static. It is a living and thriving being that is exemplified in our many campuswide programs, such as E Hō Mai Ka ?Ike: Honoring Aunty Edith Kanaka?ole and the annual Celebrate Micronesia Festival, among countless others. I have no doubt that for some of those in the audience for these programs, that first seed of curiosity was planted or nurtured this year.” — Brandon Keoni Bunag, Ed. D., vice president of Public Programs, and interim director of Education. Through our Annual Fund Campaign, you can directly impact our educational and interpretive programming, as well as the ongoing stewardship of our cultural and natural science collections. "We seek a leader who will build on the Museum's Strategic Business Plan, including the integration and advancement of our knowledge core. We are committed to seeing Bishop Museum reaffirm its place as a leading source of knowledge on biological and cultural diversity and its importance to the future of our planet." — Ann Botticelli, chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Bishop Museum. As Bishop Museum’s current President and CEO Dee Jay Mailer enters the final year of her three-year commitment to helm the Museum, the search for our next President and CEO begins. Bishop Museum was established in 1889 to house and curate the personal collections held by Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Our ?ohana includes cultural practitioners, scientists, exhibit designers, and a strong foundation of operational, program, and advancement talent to support our efforts to protect, preserve, and perpetuate the history, culture, and natural environment of Hawai?i and the Pacific. The heart of our #BishopMuseumOhana is our employees, our fellow teammates. Today, we’re highlighting our J. Watumull Planetarium team! The J. Watumull Planetarium, originally named Kilolani, opened in 1961 and has a history of being a space for?observation and learning. “What started with astronomy lectures continues today with lessons spanning a variety of subjects from modern celestial navigation and wayfinding to earth sciences.” — Romee Wizza Gaoiran, J. Watumull Planetarium manager. As presenters, storytellers, and educators, our Planetarium Team invites visitors to travel to new places and experience all that the Earth can show us. They use the Planetarium’s software to simulate movement through space and time, designing live shows to view Honolulu’s night sky in our domed theater. Thousands of visitors enjoy Planetarium shows on wayfinding, the environment, and astronomy every year. We couldn’t do what we do at Bishop Museum without volunteers. We’re so thankful for all our volunteers, who honor Pauahi and her vision for education and sharing knowledge with our community. Whether they’re helping visitors with wayfinding on campus, providing guided tours of Hawaiian Hall, or assisting our teams in the Natural Science collections, volunteers contribute to our work every day. There are also times when volunteers assist our team members out in the field. Mānoa Cliffs often provides food for the live snails in our Pūpū Ola: Kāhuli Captive Rearing Research Center. Recently, a group of volunteers joined our teammates from Malacology to cut back some invasive plants in the area, as a way to give back for what they take. If you love to learn about Hawai?i and the Pacific, and want to meet people with similar interests, we’d love to welcome you to our #BishopMuseumOhana. If you’re looking for a way to get involved and contribute, please consider volunteering your time at Bishop Museum. For details on how to apply, visit BishopMuseum.org/Volunteer. ?"The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team." — Phil Jackson At the heart of Bishop Museum, behind our galleries and the collections we steward, are our employees. Every quarter, the #BishopMuseumOhana is asked to think of a teammate that goes above and beyond, a teammate we want to recognize and celebrate together. The votes came in and the winner of our quarterly Pauahi Bowl is Bishop Museum Facilities Manager Samuel Valdez! Sam has been with the Museum for 19 years this month and leads our Buildings and Grounds team. If you’ve ever visited our campus and marveled at its beauty, it’s in large part to our B&G team’s work caring for our historic buildings and landscapes. Mahalo and congratulations, Sam! All of us with the #BishopMuseumOhana are excited for our newest exhibition, “Kū a Lanakila! Expressions of Sovereignty in Early Territorial Hawai?i, 1900-1920," opening next week! One of the central pieces of the exhibition is A?a, Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana?ole’s beloved 40-foot koa racing canoe. This week, a few of our teammates spent time in the J. M. Long Gallery with the Exhibits team to paint a festive mural landscape that will help viewers imagine A?a in Honolulu Harbor. We can’t wait to see the finished effect! Learn more about “Kū a Lanakila!” at https://lnkd.in/giVpVGbW. The exhibition opens October 5, 2024. #BishopMuseum #HawaiisMuseum

The heart of our #BishopMuseumOhana is our employees, our fellow teammates. Today, we’re highlighting part of our Education Team, our Asia Pacific (AP) Educators! “The AP Education Team’s kuleana is to introduce the history, worldview, and customs of Hawai?i to Japanese visitors and school groups through our daily public tours, various culture programs, translation of written material into Japanese, and facilitating understanding of the exhibits. Our hope is that the Japanese visitors who set foot in the Museum will share things that they had previously never learned about Hawai?i, its people, and its history with their family and friends, and that more people will be interested in visiting the Museum to learn.” When asked where they'd like to take a team photo, AP Education chose an iconic location in historic Hawaiian Hall. “The AP Education team chose the front staircase in the Hawaiian Hall Complex because it is an entrance where we welcome visitors from all over the world to the Museum. This is also where most of our guided tours start, in which hundreds of people participate every month. We are always happy to see guests come to the Museum with the desire to learn about Hawai?i. This space is a great representation of what we do here at Bishop Museum.” Learn more about the programs and work?our Asia Pacific Education team supports at BishopMuseum.org — select 日本語 (Japanese) in the language menu.
