Today, I had the honor of traveling to Philadelphia and celebrating “The Feast of Absalom Jones” with some of BWS’ finest! I want to send a huge thank you to The African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas for their invitation and warm hospitality. It was truly an honor to take part in service at such a historic site... And of course, the pride for their Eagles this Super Bowl Sunday was unmatched. They even threw in a kicker and took us to a basketball court at Tustin playground dedicated to Kobe and Gianna Bryant. Next time you’re in the city, you should absolutely check out both— St. Thomas and Tustin courts and mural. The city of brotherly love never disappoints. Until next time, Philadelphia!

  • What better way to honor Dr. King’s and Bishop Walker’s legacies than to participate in the MLK Jr. Peace Walk and Parade in SE DC! It was an absolute pleasure being in community with other organizations and schools in the neighborhood. Our Dir. of Admissions and Community Engagement, Austin Weatherington, has been busy making connections in the SE community. BWS is spending this weekend keeping the dream alive!

  • We wish our THEARC neighbors AppleTree Early Learning a very happy holiday season!

Today, I was honored to fellowship and spread some BWS holiday cheer to the amazing scholars at AppleTree Early Learning Public Charter School, here in Southeast DC. It’s admissions season here at BWS, and we’re starting right here in the neighborhood. We look forward to much more outreach, and hosting families for Open House come January. Now accepting applications for upcoming K-3 scholars. For details about our school, and how you can attend our next Open House, please visit https://lnkd.in/dqnJvZV8

  • Our Head of School, Dr. A, was part of an informative, inspiring panel on how to support Heads of color, based on the impactful research of Dr. Carrie Grimes (Vanderbilt University). The four pillars of Episcopal schools provide a strong foundation for diverse, caring leadership. Brava, Dr. A!

What an incredible day at the NAIS People of Color Conference! Sekou Andrews delivered an inspiring keynote that energized us all. The NAES workshop, Meeting the Moment: Creating the Conditions for Heads of Color to Thrive, was well received. Facilitated by NAES Executive Director The Rev. David Madison, with panelists Dr. Angelina Arrington, Head of School, The Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys (DC), Dr. Jasmine B. Harris, Head of School, TMI Episcopal, (TX), and The Rev. Michael Spencer, Head of School, Oregon Episcopal School (OR), the session focused on the impactful research of Dr. Carrie Grimes (Vanderbilt University) and sparked meaningful conversations among attendees. #naes, #episcopalschools, #pocc, #SekouAndrews

  • Senior Admin traveled to Philly last week to attend the Black Men in Education Convening conference. According to the National Teacher and Principal Survey (NTPS), only 1.3% of elementary teachers are black men and 10% are principals. At BWS, 40% of our instructional staff (grade level and specialty instruction), and 66% of our senior admin are black men. We have a longstanding commitment to having a faculty and staff that is reflective of the boys we serve.

📍 Philadelphia | November 21-23 Traveling together means growing together. Our Head of School (that’s me!), Assistant Head of School Hakim Johnson and Director of Admissions and Community Engagement Austin Weatherington proudly attended the Center for Black Educator Development’s Black Men in Education Convening conference. Mr. Johnson and I even showed up with matching suitcases! From our meaningful breakfast with Vincent J. Napoleon governing board Finance Chair, to the impactful sessions, our team gained a renewed focus on supporting our students and staff. This event provided a powerful affinity space dedicated to celebrating and supporting Black men in education. It was an incredible opportunity to connect, share insights, and deepen our commitment to Black children and communities. Thank you Center for Black Educator Development for a well planned and produced event. #LeadershipDevelopment #TeamWork #CommunityEngagement #BlackEducators #BlackMenInEducation #EquityInEducation #CBED #EducationalLeadership #EducationMatters #BlackLeadership #StudentSuccess #BMEC2024

  • Dr. Arrington, Head of School, values our partnerships with parishes in the Washington Diocese. Mother Cynthia visited BWS about a week before her installation and invited BWS to attend. The event was a wonderful opportunity for Dr. A to meet parishioners such as Ms. Leonora and thank them for their ongoing contribution to our boys. Their choir was amazing! We look forward to worshipping with St. Paul’s again in the near future.

Women Leaders Supporting Women | A Historic Installation at St. Paul’s Rock Creek On Sunday, Nov. 9, I had the privilege of attending the installation of The Reverend Cynthia Ann McKenna as the 26th Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Rock Creek Parish. St. Paul’s continues to be a generous supporter of BWS, and it was inspiring to witness this historic moment for their community. ✨ Breaking New Ground✨ Second woman Pastoral Leader at Rock Creek in three centuries supported by Bishop Mariann Budde, the first woman Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. This celebration of new ministry exemplifies the power of women in leadership, uplifting one another as we work to build thriving, equitable communities. #WomenInLeadership #CommunitySupport #EpiscopalChurch #WomenUpliftingWomen #HistoricLeadership #liftasweclimb #bishopwalkerschool
