A doula's presence can reduce the need for medical interventions and empower mothers to advocate for their health—for their lives. As stated by Dr. Joia Crear-Perry, MD, President of the National Birth Equity Collaborative, "Doulas are not a luxury, they are a necessity, especially for Black women who are disproportionately impacted by maternal mortality." A study published in the Journal of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Education found that women who received doula care had lower rates of cesarean births, preterm labor, and low birthweight babies. Doulas offer mothers continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after childbirth. ?? Call to Action for Maternal Health Equity ?? The numbers don’t lie: Midwives are crucial to ending the American maternal mortality crisis (https://lnkd.in/eRV4N9_c) ?? In the United States, about 32% of births occur by C-section, even though the World Health Organization recommends rates not exceed 10% to 15% for optimal maternal and neonatal outcomes. ?? Midwifery patients had significantly lower intervention rates, including an approximately 30-40% lower risk of C-sections. ?? States with improved midwife access see lower rates of surgical births, preterm babies, and low infant birth weight. Key changes can help facilitate a larger, more robust, more diverse midwifery workforce, improve quality of care, and reduce overall health care costs.
