In January 2025, Institutional Limited Partners Association (ILPA) released its first updated reporting and performance templates since 2016. These updates are part of a larger global effort to enhance standardization, transparency, and comparability in private market reporting. Efforts to inject transparency into the private markets are not new. In the early 2000s, regulators tightened scrutiny to protect investors following the Global Financial Crisis. For example, the Dodd-Frank Act reinforced disclosure requirements and investor protections. Historically, regulations like Dodd-Frank have improved investor confidence, which has then increased the percentage of private market alternatives in investment portfolios. The updated ILPA templates strive to achieve that purpose through three core strategies: – Promote consistent and comprehensive reporting practices – Improve communication between LPs and GPs – Create access to data necessary for making informed decisions Some analysts see these standardized reporting framework updates as part of a broader effort to increase transparency and accountability in the private equity sector.
