Today marks the 100th anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, which granted U.S. citizenship to Native Americans and finally acknowledged their rights as citizens in their own ancestral lands. However, as we commemorate this milestone, we must reflect on its profound injustice and irony: the original inhabitants of America were only recognized as citizens a mere century ago. For countless generations before, Native Americans faced disenfranchisement and exclusion from a nation built on their traditional homelands. Even after the Indian Citizenship Act, Native Americans were further denied the right to vote until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Shockingly, as recently as 2021, there have been proposed legislations attempting to disenfranchise Native voters. This ongoing struggle highlights the continuous fight for equality and justice that our communities face. Let’s recognize this anniversary by educating ourselves on Native American history and continuing to advocate for the inherent and uncompromised rights and recognition of Indigenous Peoples.
