BioUtah is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(6) trade association serving Utah's life sciences community through events, advocacy, media, connectivity, and more. We are committed to growing the Beehive State into a global life sciences leader--a recognized epicenter for innovation, job creation, and advancements in health care quality. We represent a diverse range of members, including manufacturers and developers of medical devices, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and biotechnology products, as well as government, academic, and healthcare institutions. This year at the Life Sciences Summit, I had the opportunity to introduce a new element—our inaugural Career Stories session, co-hosted with Simerdeep Singh Gupta, Ph.D. and presented by BioUtah and Salt Lake City Department of Economic Development. This session is the first step toward building a robust student track at the summit, a critical addition to the event's programming. Why focus on students? Because they represent the future of the life sciences industry. By giving them platforms to connect with professionals, learn from real-world experiences, and see themselves thriving in these careers, we create opportunities for them to engage early and grow into the innovators and leaders of tomorrow. I’m excited to help shape the Student Track in the years ahead and look forward to seeing even more students participate, learn, and engage with our vibrant community. On Wednesday morning, more than a dozen Utah legislators gathered for the Utah Life Sciences Innovation Caucus (ULSIC) at the state capitol. BioUtah President and CEO, Kelvyn Cullimore, introduced the morning's speakers, including Justine Case, a member of the Utah Rare Disease Advisory Council (RDAC), who spoke on the needs of the rare disease community and how policy impacts this particular patient population. Also recognized at the meeting were several awardees of BioUtah's 2024 Life Sciences Awards: Wm. Dean Wallace, CEO of Liger Medical, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, Blackrock Neurotech, who received the Innovation Impact Award, and Jay Muse, CEO of Piper Access, awarded Entrepreneur of the Year.
