Sen. Bernie Sanders held a meeting on breakthrough diabetes and weight-loss medications and will hold another hearing about the same topic next week. Here are 5 realities about these innovative medicines that show why it is vital that we protect the innovation ecosystem, including intellectual property rights, to allow breakthroughs like these to move from the lab to the people whose lives can be transformed by such medicines: https://lnkd.in/egKQ_bXt

Happy International Microorganisms Day! Microscopic fungi and bacteria play a huge role in agricultural efficacy and climate resiliency by improving soil health. Fun fact: did you know that one handful of soil has as many microbes as there are people on Earth? To fully reap the rewards of climate mitigation and capitalize on an emerging industry, a pathway to commercialization for genetically engineered microbes is still needed. This is why USDA should act quickly in developing a science-based approval process to bring more of these critical technologies to market. Learn more about the importance of microorganisms and the benefits they provide in a recent op-ed from BIO’s Vice President of Agriculture and the Environment Beth (Elliott) Ellikidis: https://lnkd.in/eTt4nKam?

SICKLE CELL DISEASE…BIOTECH…HOPE…SOLUTIONS and SEPT 11th… Today we hosted two remarkable ladies at BIO to share their family’s journey with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) a devastating blood disorder that can cause severe pain and lead to premature death. In the United States alone about 100,000 people are affected- 90% of whom are African American. Mapillar Dan is a warrior mom with three daughters who battle SCD and founded the MTS Sickle Cell Foundation (MTS= My Three Sisters..!). Mapillar and her daughter Tully (a brilliant and inspiring 20 year old…) shared their stories of moving from pain, fear and frustration- to hope, and now health. And they shared stories of the many lives changed now by new medicines developed by biotechnology companies in just the past decade. And the hope of many more therapies to come. Sickle Cell Warriors for sure!!! Their presence and presentation reminded me why we do these Patient Perspectives here at BIO. Yes, to inform and inspire us all. But also as a vivid reminder of the central role that patients and their families play in moving medicines forward. And overcoming obstacles. Perhaps in no disease is this more clear than SCD because of the racial disparities in health care delivery and accessibility. Without “Sickle Cell Warriors” like these, even the greatest ideas and biotechnologies may never have become approved medicines. Now we need to ensure universal access to these life changing medicines for all…no one should ever go a day without the medicines they need. But finally, we have more than just hope. We have solutions. This is the best of what biomedical research and biotechnology can do. To extend and enhance human life. And on this September 11th day especially it is a reminder as well that what evil’s ultimate aim 23 years ago was - to change our values and our systems- ultimately failed. And because of our resiliency (however messy at times it may appear and however incomplete it may yet be) that this nation is still the greatest hope on earth. And that people living in free and democratic societies worldwide are best positioned to advance the health and prosperity of all. A work in progress for sure.
