Acceleration of new promising circular agri-food value chains by integration of advanced biotechnology and investment

The BIOTECH4FOOD project aims to facilitate investment & innovation across new value chains at the nexus between biotechnologies and the agri-food industry, thanks to inter-regional collaborations. Objectives are to make agri-food industry more sustainable, with more circular manufacturing practices, efficiently valorising biomass resources, better connected to consumer demands, responding to nutrition, proteins & health challenges, for a sustainable agro-food system. The project focusses on industrial biotechnology (fermentation, enzymes, microbial proteins, etc.), deploying TR6+ innovative biotech solutions.The project is powered by a consortium composed of seven agri-food innovation clusters, three RTOs, one regional authority and four SMEs located in transition or less developed regions The consortium is endorsed by ten regional authorities (in charge of their respective S3), and represents 20 NUTS2 EU regions (2 less developed regions, 10 transition regions and 8 more developed regions). In addition, more than 20 stakeholders (Industry leaders, investment funds, accelerators, RTOs, biotech experts, etc) have confirmed their support to the project. BIOTECH4FOOD will support agri-food SMEs to set-up and scale-up new value chains through the delivery of financial & non-financial, tangible & intangible support. The core of the workplan is made of (a) an acceleration/capacity/matchmaking WP, (b) a cascade funding scheme offering various types of vouchers, and (c) a dynamic portfolio of investment projects by “anchor-SMEs”. To start with, through mapping and inventorization will be co-created to deliver strategic vision and implementation roadmap. An ambitious outreach WP with a fruitful exploitation of the project’s results, including its sustainability thanks to a its alignment with the I4CE (Ingredients for a Circular Economy) Partnership. BIOTECH4FOOD will operate with a total budget of 4.284.619 Euros, 79% of which is devoted to operational support for SMEs.

From novel #fermentation processes using not so common #microorganisms ??, which are applied to a variety of substrates and result for example in plant-based ?? dairy mimetics, to completely new products not previously know, such as the so-called “air ?? proteins”, obtained from microorganisms feeding on #CO2 and already in use for new and exciting food products, the possibilities are endless! ? However, such #innovation efforts are usually accompanied by more #questions ? than #certainties. ??♀? What regulation applies to my new product? Which category does it belong to? What data do I need to gather for regulatory clearance? ?? The combinatorial requirements can become a huge mess very quickly and turn into a massive headache for innovators and producers, usually hampering their go-to-market strategies and delaying them. ??
