Take a look at this preprint by Booth et al (https://lnkd.in/esjV7qUa) which was recently reviewed through preLights to see an example of a community-organized group that reviewed a preprint and gave feedback to authors. The rapid sharing of science by posting preprints on bioRxiv and medRxiv allows authors to incorporate this feedback and improve their manuscript. You’ll be able to see “Community Reviews” by looking at the launchbar below the preprint’s DOI (3rd icon with three people will be highlighted in red). Once you click on the icon, the link to the review will appear on the dashboard that opens on the right.? Preprint reviews are a great way for early career researchers to get involved in peer review, gain experience and network with fellow researchers. To promote the rapid dissemination of new research, bioRxiv and medRxiv depend on Affiliates who help screen manuscripts. Affiliates are active scientists who volunteer their time to quickly determine whether submitted articles include biological research and do not have the potential to cause harm to the public. Steve Royle – one of our longest standing Affiliates – has been a bioRxiv Affiliate since 2014. He is a Professor in the Centre for Mechanochemical Cell Biology at Warwick Medical School (UK). His research focuses on understanding mitosis and membrane trafficking at the molecular level to expand our knowledge on their role in the etiology of cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurodegeneration. Steve was first drawn to the role as he had already posted a couple of preprints and was excited about the potential for bioRxiv to push the boundaries of scientific publishing. After 10 years of? support for bioRxiv, Steve continues to enjoy the positive impact he has on science communication by helping peers share their research as quickly as possible.? Thanks to affiliates like Steve we can continue sharing new research within ~48h of submission. To learn more about our screening procedures please click here https://lnkd.in/e_9MkmBb

Did you know that you don't have to preview or download a PDF to read a preprint? All newly posted preprints can be read on the preprint page itself in HTML format! bioRxiv and medRxiv extract the text from the author-submitted PDF to update the information on the preprint page for the title, author list, and abstract. In addition, the main text of the PDF is also extracted with in-line figures and tables, as well as the references, which are linked to the external source. The full-text can be accessed ~48 hours after the preprint has been posted from the “Full Text” tab. HTML is really convenient, especially for mobile users, and accessible for all! The preprint platforms bioRxiv and medRxiv always put community over commercialization. They were built by and for scientists, and are run by scientists. They let you share your results in days, not months, at no cost, and everyone can read them, free. They encourage open comment, commentary, and posting peer reviews on preprints, by journals, community groups, and others. This is what open access science looks like, every day of every week. To promote the rapid dissemination of new research, bioRxiv and medRxiv depend on Affiliates who help screen manuscripts. Affiliates are active scientists who volunteer their time to quickly determine whether submitted articles include biological research and do not have the potential to cause harm to the public. Arkarup Banerjee has been a bioRxiv Affiliate since 2023. Arka is an Associate Professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (NY, USA) and his research combines cutting-edge systems neuroscience and comparative evolutionary analyses of neural circuitry across rodent species to find the structural and functional changes in the brain that specify the distinct vocal repertoires across related species. He values bioRxiv because it gives him the ability to put up a preprint on his own terms, when he’s ready, and that control is a source of great joy for him. By being an Affiliate, he can make sure he also directly contributes towards the mission of bioRxiv. Thanks to affiliates like Arka we can continue sharing new research within ~48h of submission. medRxiv was launched in 2019, following in bioRxiv's footsteps, with the objective of expediting the sharing of medical science research while ensuring a high level of scrutiny regarding ethics, patient identifying information and clinical trial registration, where appropriate. medRxiv hosts preprints in 51 subject categories, and in addition to Clinical Trials and Clinical Protocols, also posts health-related systematic reviews and research papers on diagnostic tools, medical equipment, cohort analyses, human disease modeling, and other research with a human health focus. To promote the rapid dissemination of new research, bioRxiv and medRxiv depend on Affiliates who help screen manuscripts. Affiliates are Principal Investigators who volunteer their time to quickly determine whether submitted articles include biological research and do not have the potential to cause harm to the public. Frank Moriarty joined medRxiv as an Affiliate in 2019, when medRxiv first launched. He is a clinical academic at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) with a background in pharmacy, pharmacoepidemiology and health services. Frank enjoys being an Affiliate because it provides exposure to a wide range of health research, encouraging him to read outside of his field and learn about the interesting questions and approaches being applied there. He also takes pride in being able to support the rapid sharing of new research that medRxiv enables; doing his bit to accelerate scientific progress and promote open science. Thanks to affiliates like Frank we can continue sharing new research within ~72h of submission. To learn more about our screening procedures please click here: https://lnkd.in/djuk3tkH

Once published in a peer-reviewed journal, a semi-automated process ensues to match the preprints on bioRxiv and medRxiv with their version of record. Once a match is found, the preprint page is updated with the link to the version on the journal’s site. Our team then emails the corresponding author to notify them of the link. This process may take up to 3 weeks after publication. As changes to the title or author list may prevent a preprint match occurring, if your preprint has not been linked after that time, please email the corresponding server at [email protected] / [email protected] and provide the DOIs to both the preprint and its version of record. Note that all versions of the preprint will remain on the preprint server after journal publication.
