“We probably owe the taxpayer some results,” said no one lately, except the farmer/landowner quoted here. The article may be a little slanted, but just what's needed for a national clean water strategy that is riddled with conflicts of interest. Along with most states, too. From dairy and Big Sugar in FL to swine in NC to the Chesapeake Bay's well-meaning (mostly) 'clean water mafia' to big ag's influence in the Midwest, we've watched one group after another put their interests ahead of both the taxpayer and the Planet. For decades. It should come as no surprise that we now have an epidemic of (increasingly toxic) algae blooms and dead zones and groundwater contaminated with nitrates. “This is such a huge rip-off of public money,” is an understatement that echoes across America. And those conflicts are a large reason why 42% of our nation’s river and stream waters were rated in poor condition in 2019.
