Empowering people to create nature-inspired solutions for a healthy planet.

关于我们

The Biomimicry Institute (biomimicry.org) is on a mission to help solve humanity’s biggest challenges through the adoption of biomimicry (nature-inspired innovation) in education, culture, and industry. For eons, nature has solved its problems with well-adapted designs, life-friendly chemistry, and smart material and energy use. We exist to shine a light on nature’s genius, and bridge pressing design challenges with proven biological strategies for a better future. Our initiatives across education, innovation, inspiration, and systems change have empowered thousands with the tools and training necessary to create a healthier world, and to improve their lives in the process. To amplify our impact, we unite a global network of educators, innovators, changemakers, scientists, and others passionate about solving environmental and social challenges through nature-inspired design. Our work will not be complete until biomimicry is at the core of the human experience and the sustainable health of the planet is secure.

  • ???Stuck on a problem? Ask nature!??? What if the solutions to our biggest challenges have already been tested—over millions of years—by nature? That’s the power of?biomimicry, and Andrew Howley, Chief Editor at The Biomimicry Institute, broke it down beautifully with Claire Bridges MSc on the?Now Go Create. ?? From bullet trains inspired by kingfisher beaks to color-changing materials mimicking butterfly wings, nature offers?ready-made blueprints?for innovation. And it’s not just about design—biomimicry can reshape business models, communication strategies, and even sustainable manufacturing. ?? A key takeaway??Quiet your cleverness.?Instead of forcing ideas, simply?observe?the natural world. Just like the engineer who noticed burrs sticking to his dog’s fur and invented Velcro, inspiration often comes when we stop and listen to what nature is already doing. ?? • What if clean energy didn’t rely on rare, costly, and high-emission metals? Today’s energy storage depends on Platinum Group Metal (PGM) catalysts, which emit 17 tons of CO? per kg, face supply chain risks, and come with soaring costs. Enter AZUL Energy Inc., a 2024 Ray of Hope Accelerator company! They are pioneering a PGM-free alternative, inspired by hemoglobin. Why it matters: ? Enhances energy storage solutions ?? Uses abundant, widely available resources ?? Reduces CO? emissions ?? Improves cost performance How it works: The hemoglobin-inspired structure and geometry of the AZUL catalyst now lends to its improved longevity and energy storage performance, with applications to fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and LDES (long-duration energy storage) devices. The discovery also led the company to establish a unique supply and production pathway to minimize environmental harm. Unlike traditional PGM catalysts, AZUL catalysts produce considerably less CO? during the manufacturing process, dramatically reducing their environmental impact. Very exciting! ?? Every second counts when it comes to saving a live, yet current solutions for wounds like sutures and staples often fall short, leading to life-threatening complications. Meet SanaHeal, Inc., a member of our 2024 Ray of Hope Accelerator! The team is redefining hemostasis with a breakthrough biomaterial designed to rapidly and reliably seal wet tissue surfaces, something no existing innovation has achieved. Inspired by the unique capabilities of spider web glue for rapid wet adhesion and barnacle glue for fouling-resistant wet adhesion, SanaHeal’s innovation redefines the future of safer surgeries and emergency care! The benefits: ?? Heals wounds faster ??? Creates a contamination-resistant seal ? Minimizes preparation time How it works: SanaHeal’s novel hemostatic paste, a medical product that stops bleeding by promoting blood clotting, is manufactured using bioengineered polymers and silica nanoparticles to mimic the strong, water-resistant adhesion of barnacle glue. Applied directly to wounds and activated by light compression, the tissue sealant forms a tight seal in about 15 seconds. Total game-changer! ??
