The Tardigrade's Guide to Hydration All known life depends on liquid water. But tardigrades somehow manage to be able to lose 95% of their water, stay shriveled up and dried out for DECADES and then, with a spritz of water, saunter back off in their microscopic Winnie-the-Pooh ways. How do they do it? Magic. Actually not magic, but chemistry! Two molecular level tools make it possible. First, disordered proteins float around and as the water leaves, they get concentrated and fit together in a rambly, jumbled way that forms a protective matrix around the more delicate proteins necessary for life to function—this locks them up, preventing them from breaking down, and keeping them fresh and ready to function when water returns. The other bit of magic—err, chemistry—is trehalose. This is a sugar that serves a similar function on a larger scale, forming a protective shield around cellular structures, keeping them from collapsing and being torn apart during the drying process. Together, these molecular tools keep everything inside a dried out tardigrade safe and ready to roll when water gets absorbed back in, and life’s dynamic processes can begin again. We’ll leave you to contemplate what kind of mental state these animals experience during all of that. ?? What if sustainable materials could enhance performance on even the toughest terrains? CompPair Technologies Ltd., part of our 2023 Ray of Hope Accelerator cohort, partnered with Composite Recycling to make this a reality with their latest innovation—a roof scoop made from recycled fibers for the Objectif Dunes eco-efficient rally buggy. Here’s why this innovation matters: ?? Optimized Airflow – The roof scoop channels air directly to the engine, boosting cooling and efficiency, critical for high-performance in desert conditions. ? Circular Materials – By integrating recycled fibers, they’re setting a new standard for sustainable composites, proving that high durability and eco-efficiency can go hand in hand. ?? Eco-Efficient Repair – CompPair’s self-healing composites make in-field repairs a breeze, enhancing both performance and sustainability during the rally. This collaboration doesn’t just highlight what’s possible with advanced composites; it showcases how sustainable materials can bring uncompromised performance in the most challenging environments. See how they’re driving the future of racing with sustainable innovation: Read the full article https://lnkd.in/gbmjkhu3 #biomimicry #rayofhopeaccelerator #recycledfibers #composites #selfhealingcomposites

?? By bringing founders together in nature, away from the pressures of daily life, and providing them with the tools and space to build deep connections, we create the conditions for a thriving ecosystem of collaboration and support. This ecosystem can become a powerful force for scaling nature-inspired innovations and driving the systemic change needed to address our climate crisis. Our Ray of Hope Accelerator team took the 2024 Cohort to the Catskills for a reconnection with nature's genius. ?? The More You Snow ?? Citizen science, meet outdoor recreation. Algae is the hidden life form that gives a reddish blush to mountain snowfields and, like other algae, this kind runs on chlorophyll. So why doesn’t it look green? Slide on over to AskNature.org to learn how microbiologist Robin Kodner and mountain-lovers are teaming up to better understand this aesthetic, snowy phenomenon. ?? Ivu Biologics is about to revolutionize the agriculture industry. The transition from chemical based fertilizers and pesticides to biological ones has been limited by the poor shelf life of biological fertilizers and pesticides. ?? Ivu Biologics, part of the Ray of Hope Accelerator cohort, is changing that! Inspired by tardigrades and silkworms, the team has developed a seed coating technology that binds growth-promoting microbes to seeds and allows the fragile microbes to survive on the shelf until they’re planted in fields, reducing the need for conventional fertilizers and pesticides. A total game changer in the industry. Animation: Jules Bartl Script and Narration: Charlotte Stoddart Sound Design: Nigel Manington Fact checker: Rachael Bale Special thanks to the Ray C.
