Supporting underrepresented students in their pursuit of careers in biomedical sciences, biopharma & health professions

关于我们

The Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) was founded in 1991 by Joan Y. Reede, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.B.A, with the aim of increasing the representation of underrepresented minorities in all facets of science and medicine while helping health care institutions, biopharma/biotechnology firms, educational institutions, professional organizations and private industry members meet their need for a diverse workforce. BSCP was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1994. The founding sponsors of BSCP are the Harvard Medical School Minority Faculty Development Program, the New England Board of Higher Education and the Massachusetts Medical Society. The primary objective of all BSCP activities is to identify, inform, support and provide mentoring for academically outstanding students/fellows, particularly African-American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alaska Native individuals. BSCP’s first student conference took place in March 1992 and was attended by 300 high school, college, medical and graduate minority students. Since its inception, more than 13,000 minority students and 1,200 underrepresented postdoctoral trainees and junior faculty members have participated in BSCP programs. Participants range from high school to postdoctoral level and attend from across the country.

I had the recent distinct honor to be named a 2024 Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) Hope Scholarship Recipient at the annual Evening of Hope Gala. At such a momentous time in my PhD journey, this award -- beyond its tangible support of my aspirations-- is also the spirit of encouragement and validation that enables me to forge a path ahead, now more than ever. I am grateful to Dr. Joan Reede, Hollie DeSilva, Khaliah Noel-Gibson and the entire BSCP team for their visionary leadership, support, and investment in students like me. Vertex Pharmaceuticals generously sponsored my?scholarship and I am so grateful to the team of Vertex supporters who showed up for the occasion including Mark Bunnage and Nathan Ross. Thank you for your support! I'm thankful that spaces like these also gave me a chance to re-connect with my BSCP mentor Dr. Brian Lewis and former Dean at Brown, Dr. Marlina Duncan, both incredible advocates who helped me transition into the PhD at Brown University. Thanks to my parents who accompanied me to receive this honor. Gracias Mami y Apa. Back home, my cheerleaders Lyn Berelsman and David Berelsman were also sharing in the excitement. This period of my life is marked with so much gratitude to my growing community of mentors and supporters for uplifting me and empowering me! I will continue to pay it back! ?? Protein Sciences Drug Discovery Researcher

Hello Everyone, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) for the incredible opportunity to speak at the Skills and Workshop event this past weekend at Harvard Medical School. Being able to connect with so many talented, driven students who are just beginning their journeys in STEM was deeply inspiring and reminded me of the limitless potential we have when we support each other. It was truly an honor to share my story, the obstacles I’ve encountered, and the lessons I’ve learned, in hopes of inspiring others to pursue their own dreams fearlessly. Reflecting on my path in STEM so far, I know the value of mentorship and community, and Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) has created an environment where students feel empowered to grow, take risks, and push beyond their comfort zones. I’m grateful to have had the chance to speak directly to these aspiring scientists, doctors, and innovators, encouraging them to persist, even when the journey feels uncertain. We are all on unique paths, yet we share the common goal of making a meaningful impact on the world through science and medicine. I hope that through sharing my journey, I was able to encourage future leaders in STEM to view every challenge as a stepping stone and every setback as a learning experience. The future of STEM lies in the hands of this next generation, and it was truly a privilege to encourage them to think boldly, dream big, and stay committed to their goals. A heartfelt thank you to Joan Reede, Hollie DeSilva, Pinar Kilicci-Kret, and to the entire Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) team for their warm welcome and the honor of allowing me to represent so many aspiring students. Connecting with individuals who are so passionate and determined in their academic and career journeys within STEM was truly inspiring and reaffirmed the power of community and mentorship in shaping the future of science and medicine. As I continue my journey—working toward becoming a neurosurgeon, applying to medical schools, pursuing the Fulbright program, and managing a media company—I’m constantly reminded of how fulfilling and empowering this path has been. Every step brings new challenges and growth, and I’m more motivated than ever to reach for what lies ahead. I’m deeply grateful for the support of this inspiring community, which has shown me that with dedication, resilience, and the encouragement of others, we can achieve remarkable things. Thank you again to Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) for this unforgettable opportunity, and to the mentors and organizers who work tirelessly to create a space where growth, support, and excellence thrive. Being part of this inspiring community has been a profound honor, and I am humbled to contribute in any way to shaping the future of STEM. I cannot wait to be part of another Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) event to inspire like-minded individuals again.
