Emotional storytelling is a storytelling technique that uses narrative to evoke strong emotional responses in audiences, enhancing their connection and engagement. The Plutchik Wheel of Emotions, a psychological theory by Robert Plutchik, categorizes human emotions into eight primary ones.


Emotional storytelling requires a deep understanding of your target audience's emotions to engage them effectively. Using relatable characters and showcasing synergy between brand value and the campaign, along with effective CTA, can lead to a good campaign.

Emotional Storytelling Checklist:

1. Know your audience (Create User Personas or Conduct Surveys/interviews

4. Evoke a range of emotions

The effectiveness of Emotional storytelling in marketing can be gauged through metrics like brand awareness, customer engagement, and sales, as well as social media reactions, shares, and comments.

Here are a few examples of Emotive storytelling and how brands leverage them.

  1. Nike's "Dream Crazy" campaign: The campaign, featuring Colin Kaepernick, emphasizes the significance of dreaming big and overcoming obstacles through an emotional narrative and a message of perseverance and determination.
  2. Disney's "The Lion King": The animated film, Simba, follows a young lion's journey to find his place in life, renowned for its emotional impact, particularly in the tragic death of Mufasa.
  3. The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green: The novel, later adapted into a movie, is a heart-wrenching love story between two teenagers with cancer, highlighting themes of love, mortality, and human experience.
