Even though general policy may be helpful in promoting STEM diversity, I have come to believe that internal ethnic community preferences and outlooks are the primary determiner of diverse groups participation in the US STEM sectors. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we are honoring those who are actively making contributions to Latino health. Since starting at the Institute for Health Promotion Research at UT Health San Antonio earlier this year, Dr. Derek Rodriguez has helped dozens of Latino cancer survivors tell their stories through his role as program manager for the Avanzando Caminos Hispanic/Latino Cancer Survivorship Study. PepVax is a company that is working on finding a treatment of mTNBC at the late stage. However, any drug that comes out for this dreaded disease for thousand of women is a celebration. The Food and Drug Administration expanded the approval of Kisqali, a drug for metastatic breast cancer, to also treat patients with earlier stages of the disease. Even so, Kisqali can cause life-threatening conditions, such as severe lung inflammation, heart rhythm problems, and serious skin reactions.
