We apply the science of ecology to restore ecosystems, conserve habitat, and regenerate natural systems.

关于我们

Mission: Restore The Earth And Inspire Ecological Stewardship. Our practice can best be defined as a blend of sound science, place-based design and ecological democracy. It is rooted in deep ecology with an underpinning that all species have equal rights, and that we have an ethical obligation to ensure that our actions do not interfere with their evolutionary potential. It is ingrained with the intent to design with ‘place’ and all of its complexity, diversity and life. And it is infused with a sense of compassion, fairness and equity for all peoples and their communities. Science forms the core of our practice. Science that is as informed by rigorous field investigations and meticulous research as it is from knowing the land and learning its stories. While the science provides us with the facts, stories provide the context to help us see things from a whole-systems perspective. Patterns, connections and relationships continually reveal themselves through stories, providing a rich tapestry of life that forms the basis of our design ethos.

We are excited to share that The EcoCommons at Georgia Institute of Technology has received an Honor Award for General Design from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)! A big shoutout to #Teambarge and its partners for their creative collaboration on this one-of-a-kind project! It was a great team effort with Barge as Landscape Architect of Record, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW) as Design Landscape Architect, Biohabitats providing ecological sciences expertise and Long Engineering (now Atlas) providing civil engineering services. Home to iconic species like pronghorn and prairie dogs, this ecosystem is dominated by blue grama, sagebrush and other native grasses and shrubs. Sage grouse, sage thrashers, and a diversity of pollinators find food and cover in this vegetation. In this section of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s Nature Play experience, swing high above a sand wash, climb a wacky post net, and learn about sediment deposits as you dig for fossils at the waterway’s edge. Sustainable Design Strategy, R&D, Biotechnologies

It was a pleasure to produce the side-event Tides for Change with WeCare Impact for this years Climate Week and facilitate a panel on Green Infrastructure for Community and Ecological Resilience. This event centered global water conservation efforts and I was pleased to bring its ethos to a local perspective on New York City waterways in conversation with Vaughn Shinall Head of Product and Outreach at Temboo and Kevin Dahms, PE a Water Resource Engineer at Biohabitats. We discussed both of their work which provides critical data and ecological assessment for wetland restoration and resilience projects along major city waterfronts. We also discussed the importance of community engagement and stewardship in implementing nature-based solutions and empowering communities around land-based climate adaptation and mitigation projects. Thank you Vaughn and Kevin for the informative conversation and to all who attended. #climateweek2024

    Conservation Biologist with Biohabitats

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending Wild Side with my colleague, Meghan Gloyd, P.E. and wonderful wife Whitney Schillerstrom. Biohabitats was proud to be the primary sponsor of this inspiring (and harrowing given the discussions around ongoing Hurricane Helene impacts) evening hosted by South Carolina Environmental Law Project. Rob Young, PhD, PG and SCELP Executive Director Amy Armstrong did a fantastic job delivering thoughtful and powerful speeches to the crowd of attendees. Hosted by the South Carolina Environmental Law Project (SCELP), “Wild Side is more than just a fundraiser—it’s a celebration of the life and vision of SCELP’s founder, Jimmy Chandler, and a powerful reminder of the work that remains to be done to protect South Carolina’s natural treasures.” It was an honor to stand alongside so many dedicated people who share a deep passion for safeguarding our land, water, and communities. Fun fact: Did you know that South Carolina nonprofits host significantly more fundraising events than NGOs in other states? That makes it even more challenging to organize a successful fundraiser here! Kudos SCELP team on a job well done! #EnvironmentalLaw #Conservation #Community #Biohabitats #SCELP #WildSide #ProtectWhatYouLove #Fundraising
