The Bioeconomy in Transition Research Group (BiT-RG) at IdEA, Unitelma-Sapienza University of Rome is involved in research concerning the emergence of a circular and bio-based economy relying on the utilisation of renewable resources for the production of novel products for various applications. Core areas of investigation pursued at BiT-RG include: - economic and sustainability assessments, within the sustainability transition and multi level perspective framework; - innovation studies and social network analysis; - policy and regulation analysis through agent-based modelling. Most of these areas of enquiry aim at supporting decision makers in developing innovation strategies as well as specific strategies to maximise the social impact and minimize the environmental footprint of economic activities and boost the transition to a bio-based economy.

That’s where hotspots and value chains come in! ?? Hotspots: These are key regions with high GHG emissions, resource-intensive practices, or waste management issues. ?? Value Chains: These cover the entire lifecycle of a product—from raw material extraction to waste disposal—ensuring sustainability at every stage. ?? BioFairNet's Approach: ? Identifying hotspots where sustainable transitions can have the biggest impact. ? Rethinking value chains to integrate circular economy principles. ?     ?? Exciting News: The BioFairNet Project Has Officially Kicked Off! ???? On January 17, 2025, the BioFairNet project—short for "Bioeconomy and Circular Economy Fair Network"—was successfully launched with a kick-off meeting in Naples, Italy! Funded by Horizon Europe, this initiative will run until December 2028, with a mission to support high greenhouse gas (GHG)-emitting industries in transitioning towards sustainable, bio-circular economy models. ?? Why is this important? Industries like agriculture and mining are among the largest contributors to global GHG emissions. BioFairNet aims to transform these sectors by fostering innovation, collaboration, and sustainability through digital tools and cooperative networks. ?? What will BioFairNet do? ? Develop a Digital Platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration ? Create Transition Tools to help industries adopt sustainable practices ? Conduct Sectoral Analysis to identify solutions for a greener future ? Engage Stakeholders through co-creation, testing, and validation ?? Who’s behind BioFairNet?     Meet the RBRF Partner ???? Unitelma Sapienza Located in Rome and renowned as Italy’s main online teaching university, Unitelma Sapienza offers education in Law and Economics, with a strong research department focused on scientific and economic sectors. Particularly, Unitelma’s Bioeconomy in Transition research group (BiT-RG) will help Rural BioReFarmeries develop innovation strategies to maximise the social impact of the project’s activities, and in turn effectively boost the transition to a #Bioeconomy powered by #GreenBiorefineries. Team involved????? Piergiuseppe Morone, Full professor of Economic Policy and Coordinator of BiT-RG; Rocco Caferra, Post-Doc Researcher; Eleonora S., PhD Researcher; and Giulia Borghesi, Junior Project Manager. Role in RBRF ?? Unitelma’s team are leaders of Work Package 6: ‘Analysis of Environmental and Socio-Economic Performance’. To achieve their main task, they will use Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to analyse the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the #biorefinery chain at local scale in rural areas. They will also work closely with many other RBRF partners to conduct a #biodiversity impact assessment of different feedstock and biorefinery scenarios, and perform an economic analysis from the farmers’ perspective.   • Today at Università degli Studi di Roma UnitelmaSapienza, we had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. Otilia Murariu, Prof Gianluca Caruso, and Prof. Florin Murariu for an engaging seminar. Prof. Otilia Murariu opened the session by introducing "Ion Ionescu de la Brad" Iasi University of Life Sciences (IULS). Following this, Prof. Gianluca Caruso and Prof. Florin Murariu presented their compelling research on Vegetal Product Chains in the Food Industry. The seminar explored the intersection of food technology and dietary practices, with a specific focus on the advantages and disadvantages of high-temperature food processing versus freeze-drying techniques.   • ???Exciting news: The BioFairNet project officially takes off!??? ??On January 17, 2025, the BioFairNet project, funded by the Horizon Europe program and the European Commission, was launched during a kick-off meeting in Naples. This ambitious initiative, led by the University of Naples Federico II, brings together a consortium of 12 institutions and organizations from Europe, Canada, and Kenya. ??With a total budget of €4.4 million and a duration of three years, BioFairNet addresses some of the most pressing environmental challenges. The project is committed to driving the transition of high-emission sectors, such as agriculture and mining, towards a bio-circular economy model, paving the way for sustainable and low-impact practices. ??A key goal of the project is the creation of an innovative digital cooperative network to enhance stakeholder engagement, foster knowledge transfer, and enable the co-creation of sustainable solutions. By focusing on the development and implementation of practical tools, BioFairNet aims to facilitate the shift to bio-circular systems while integrating economic, environmental, and social considerations into this transformative process. ??We’re proud to highlight that Unitelma is coordinating Work Package 2, which focuses on multidimensional sustainability analysis. In particular, Unitelma is leading the Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), a methodology designed to evaluate the socio-economic impacts of agricultural and mining value chains. #BioFairNet #Bioeconomy #sustainability

  • ?? Exciting news from the BiT Research Group! ?? ?? We are happy to share that on December 10th the #European Rural #BioReFarmeries (RBRF) project was launched in Cork, Ireland, at Munster Technological University (MTU). ?? The project is funded by the CBE-JU (Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking) with €8.7 million, aims to develop small biorefineries in rural areas, showcasing the benefits of the bioeconomy for farmers and local communities and will run for 4 years, involving 19 partners from 8 European countries. The project will develop two demonstration sites in Ireland and Denmark, focusing on green biorefining and anaerobic digestion. These processes aim to optimize the conversion of grass, clover, and green residues into sustainable products like human and animal-grade proteins, bio-based packaging, natural flavors, antimicrobials, feed additives, fertilizers, and energy. We’re proud to announce the launch of our Environmental Sustainability Initiative, aimed at tackling climate change and supporting local communities through the power of behavioral economics. As part of our initiative, we’ve partnered with Treedom, a certified B Corp, to allocate some of our profits towards a CO2 offset project. ? Through this collaboration, we’ve planted 40 trees across Ecuador, Ghana, and Colombia, contributing to the absorption of an estimated 6.37 tons of CO2 over the next 10 years! ?? ? Here’s a breakdown of our efforts: ? Ecuador: 20 banana trees & 14 cacao trees, enhancing local food sustainability ???? Ghana: 3 African Mahogany trees, with the potential to absorb up to 1000 kg of CO2 each ?? Colombia: 3 Hura Crepitans trees, each capable of absorbing 800 kg of CO2 ?? This project is a great example of how collective decisions, powered by behavioral economics, can lead to tangible environmental and social impacts. We're thrilled to see how our contribution is helping combat climate change while fostering food sustainability and supporting local farmers. ?
