The illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade is one of the leading causes of species extinction. Driven by demand for pets, traditional medicine, fashion, and more, this trade is pushing wildlife to the brink, with severe consequences for animals, public health, and biodiversity. Stricter regulations can help, but the real solution lies in placing consumer demand reduction at its core. In this latest article, I detail three critical case studies taken from our recent research in Peru, China, and South Africa, that show how addressing consumer behaviour and promoting sustainable alternatives can help tackle the problem. While the challenges are significant, the path to change is achievable - we can reshape a future where both wildlife and communities thrive. Pleased to share our new paper on the feeding habits of olive baboons in Kainji Lake National Park, Nigeria. These fascinating primates play a key role in ecotourism, but food scarcity can also lead to human conflicts with people… Our research, based on two years of field observations, provides insights for park authorities to enhance conservation efforts (particularly for native fruit trees) and underscores the need for further research on how food availability influences baboon behaviour.
