I am incredibly proud to see my former students—now colleagues and friends—succeeding in what started as a class project. Their achievements inspire me to continually enhance my biodesign teaching methodologies, expand our network, and empower students and alumni to pursue their dreams of building a more sustainable and equitable world. Out of 3000 applications worldwide, LixiLab was selected for its innovative solution to urgent global challenges in water systems. Veena Vijayakumar started her journey with Biodesign Challenge as the Program Associate in August of 2017 when it was still a program of @Genspace. She helped Daniel Grushkin spin BDC into its own nonprofit in October of 2018 and has been supporting the program since, as Program Manager, then Program Director, and most recently as the Interim Executive Director. Starting next month, Veena will come on as a consultant to oversee and support our high school students and teachers who participate in Biodesign Challenge After-School, a program that she developed during the pandemic to ensure students from Title 1 Schools have equitable access to the biology and design learning that BDC provides. Over the years, Veena has gotten to truly know and love the BDC community, and she's looking forward to continuing to support in new capacities moving forward! Biodesign Challenge is immensely grateful for her support and guidance over the years and can't wait to see what Veena will embark on next.

As this summer comes to an end, we would like to highlight some moments from BDC 2024. This year we hosted the first annual Biodesign Symposium, where we partnered with Cambridge University Press to publish papers in Research Directions: Biotechnology Design journal addressing the question “How do we grow a Biodesigner?” Out of the 60 papers published in the journal, 14 were presented at the Symposium. This year also marked our 9th annual Biodesign Challenge Summit. 150 students from around the world presented their projects addressing biodesign across architecture, food, fashion, health, materials, energy, and more. Our summit also featured a gallery exhibition, performances, talks as well as a lunch excursion to Swarowski. Thank you so much to all the students, mentors, volunteers, judges, and attendees who made this summer so memorable! Nora Gulya (Textile Design), Szonja Somogyvári (Graphic Design), and Csongor Boldizsár Nagy (Media Design) began #developing their #revolutionary writing instrument during a course at our university, which led them to win the “Outstanding Art” award at the Biodesign Challenge 2024 in New York this June. This prestigious award includes a one-year #scholarship and a solo exhibition in 2025. Inspired by the color-changing pens from their childhood, they developed a plastic-free and sustainable product. The MOME students showcased their PHen project in New York back in June, and the project has continued to evolve since then. #PHens are #innovative, #sustainable markers that use pH-responsive pigments derived from #bacteria and #vegetables like red cabbage. These eco-friendly markers change color based on pH variations, are #refillable, reducing waste, and eliminating harmful chemicals. Designed to be open-source and #3D #printable, these markers offer creative versatility with multiple colors in one pen. Future plans include developing a 3D printer adapter for applications in t#extile and #graphic #design. As the project continues, the team will have the opportunity to present their work in Brooklyn next year. ? Get to know the team and watch the video!
