The Binghamton Philharmonic put on show today called Classically Black: Great Music of African American Composers it was a 50-minute, narrated program featuring music by African American composers Terence Blanchard is a jazz trumpeter, bandleader, film score composer, and recording artist. He is an alumnus of Berklee where he teaches and mentors he also served as artistic director for the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz at University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Duke Ellington is considered one of the greatest jazz composers of all time, he had a big impact on the popular music of the late 20th century. He had more than two thousand songs and toured the world as a band leader and piano player. Adolphus Hailstork has his doctorate in composition from Michigan State University, he studied at the Manhattan School of Music, at the American Institute at Fontainebleau and at Howard University. Dr. Hailstork has written numerous works for chorus, solo voice, piano, organ, various chamber ensembles, band, orchestra, and opera. Quinn Mason Praised as one of the most sought after young composers in the country and has distinguished himself as an artist of national and international renown. Florence Beatrice (Smith) Price was the first black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra. Music Director Frederick Stock and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra played for her premiere of Symphony No. 1 in E minor on June 15, 1933, entitled “The Negro in Music.” William Grant Still William Grant Still is remembered for many musical and historical achievements, including becoming the first African-American to conduct a major symphony orchestra in the US, to direct a major symphony orchestra in the Deep South, to conduct a major American network radio orchestra, to have an opera produced by a major American company and to have an opera televised over a national network in the United States.
